Planning a trip to Airventure 2022

Although I drive and don’t fly, I stay in Green Bay. It’s about 1/3 the price than staying in somewhere like Appleton or closer. In 2017, I spent over $600 for 3 nights in a Motel 6 in Appleton. Ever since, I’ve spent around $250 for 4 nights in Green Bay. Yes it’s an hour drive one way, but...

Grumman AA1 vs. Zenith CH 601/650

Thanks everyone for your replies. From what I’ve read (on this board as well as others), the Zenith has a bit of drag, and it can be felt if you give it a lot of throttle, and flies better if you lower the power a little. But how does it do at higher altitudes? The website claims 160 mph at...

Grumman AA1 vs. Zenith CH 601/650

Not really. Looking for something affordable, both in purchase price and ownership costs, but would like something that I could travel in. A C150 is a bit too slow.

Grumman AA1 vs. Zenith CH 601/650

This may be an apples/oranges comparison, as it’s between a certified aircraft versus an experimental. But how do these aircraft compare in terms of cost effectiveness and performance? In my case I’d be buying used, not building if I went with the Zenith. Based on a few ads I’ve seen...

    Zenith CH 650 cruise speed

I see where I can buy a new, factory-built CH 650 in Eastman, Ga, for $140k. I’d rather buy a used one for a fifth the price. It doesn’t say on their site whether they’ll perform maintenance or prebuys. http://newplane.com/

    Zenith CH 650 cruise speed

I’ve been researching the 650, and it seems to be a nice, affordable airplane. For those of you who own or have flown one, what air speeds do you typically average? Also, the website claims up to 160 mph (139 kts) cruise at 8k feet. Would you say this is true or are they embellishing a bit...

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

    Pretty inexpensive. :D

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

Interesting! I’ve never heard of Thorp before now, and apparently you can still order a kit. Pricing looks inexpensive, but the site doesn’t really give a build time estimate. I watched a YT video, and they said it’s both inexpensive and easy to build.

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

True, but the Avocet is fixed gear. o_O

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

Yes, I’m not down on RVs. I was just wanted to see if there was anything else similar to their performance and at a lower price. Another aircraft is the Avocet AV24. It’s not available yet, but the website claims the VH speed is 200 kts at 10k feet with 180 hp. IF the airplane performs like...

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

Zenith seems to specialize in slower, STOL aircraft, but their Zenith CH 650 is there cross-country model. They claim around 120 kt cruise, and up to 135 (160 mph) if you climb to over 8,000 feet. I wonder how it would do with a turbocharged engine, such as the Rotax 914 or even the 915 (it’s...

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

Too much engine. A 2-seat RV (not to mention the other aircraft named) will fly circles around it with smaller engines.

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

That and maintenance costs. Perhaps they are nowhere near the cost of certified aircraft, especially if you do your own (I don’t). One thing I failed to mention is that I wish to do X/C’s for fun, not out of necessity or business. Lancairs/Glasairs are great for getting from one place to...

Best X/C aircraft besides Vans RV

Vans RVs are good for x-country’s in that they can have the engine of a 4-seat Cessna or Piper (160/180 hp), yet they rival the speed of a Centurion or Bonanza, and in some cases may even exceed it, depending on the engine, empty weight, etc. AND they do so on a fixed gear. I fit right in with...

    Anyone familiar with Pulsar aircraft?

Ok, the article I read was about the Super Pulsar. Silly me . Bonanza-speeds are still fantastic for an airplane with those engine sizes, especially on a fixed-gear.

    Anyone familiar with Pulsar aircraft?

I don’t know much about these aircraft, but the manufacturer claims that these airplanes can cruise at 180 kts (Vne is 191 kts), yet doing so on engines ranging between 100-125 hp (Rotax and Continental are two engine choices, I think there are more). Can I really expect this kind of...

Owning and renting your aircraft through an FBO?

I’ve heard the idea of owning an aircraft and letting an FBO (or flight school, etc.) rent it to others and also maintain it, though the owner is responsible for the maintenance costs. While this wouldn’t likely be a money maker, it would help the aircraft pay for itself, and also ensure it’s...

    Job outlook for Alaskan pilot?

Assuming that you had the required ratings and enough hours logged, how easy would it be to get a career in aviation in Alaska? I’ve never really wanted to go the airline route, but I think it’d be awesome to fly a smaller aircraft such as a Kodiac Quest, a Cessna 207/208, a Beaver/Otter, etc...

    Thoughts on Vans RV?

Would either of those aircraft be suitable for someone who doesn’t know how to do maintenance, and would it be difficult to find a qualified mechanic who could work on them?

    Any nonbuilder/non-gearhead owners?

Retractable gear is also a factor.
