Do constant speed props need to be pitched for a certain airspeed?

It’s my understanding that when mounting a fixed-pitch prop on an aircraft, it has to be pitched for a certain airspeed. If you removed a Lycoming O-360 from a Beech Sundowner and mounted it to a Vans RV or Glasair, you couldn’t use the same prop or you’d overspeed the engine. Likewise with...

Aircraft with 180 hp conversions vs. their counterparts

Fixed-gear Glasair FT a good budget airplane?

    It can’t be worse than a C150, can it?……

Fixed-gear Glasair FT a good budget airplane?

I saw on a yt video where someone said a prop could range between $15-17k, and maybe $12k for 2-blade (I mentioned a c/s prop was “somewhat” more expensive, I hadn’t seen the video until after posting). I had no idea a c/s prop was that expensive, but perhaps this only for a new prop, and not a...

Aircraft with 180 hp conversions vs. their counterparts

Yes. Seems like I’ve read that the older 60’s model C172s with the conversions are real sweet machines compared with the later models.

QUICK POLL FOR EVERYONE: Which are you?

Fixed-gear Glasair FT a good budget airplane?

While I’m well read up on Vans RVs and spam can Cessnas and Pipers, I’ve never given much thought of owning a Glasair as I’ve always assumed they’d be expensive to maintain and insure due to being retractable gear (same with Lancairs). There’s currently (at the time of this posting) a 1986...

Aircraft with 180 hp conversions vs. their counterparts

When it comes to the Cherokee 140/160/Warriors that have had a 180 hp etc done, how do they compare with the actual Cherokee 180 in terms of cruise speed, climb, payload, etc.? I believe the cockpit size may differ, so perhaps this could make it a better performer than the Cherokee 180? If you...

Planes that will make the Hawaii trip

https://kingairmagazine.com/article/flight-of-the-waikiki-beech/ Someone had done this in a Bonanza. And didn’t stop at the West Coast either. That’s for pansies. (This may have already been shared; I didn’t read all the replies in this thread).

I definitely won’t be doing that.

    Comm radio replacement costs?

If I were to buy an aircraft (presumably an older aircraft with an old-fashioned, steam-gauge panel), and the radios were to fail and had to be replaced, about how much does this tend to cost? This includes both the price of the comm and the installation costs. I realize the price can vary...

Upgrade from Cherokee 180 to Mooney E?

True. And even one of the previous posters stated that Mooney pilots don’t ever wish they were flying Cherokees, even for recreational flying. (Here again, I myself may wish I had a fixed-gear Cherokee come time for the annual inspection).

Upgrade from Cherokee 180 to Mooney E?

I failed to mention that in my case, it would be purely for fun and recreation, not work. But I’d still like to have an airplane that can travel for those $100 hamburgers.

Upgrade from Cherokee 180 to Mooney E?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but one comparison between the Cherokee and Mooney I’m wondering about is the maintenance costs, due to the one being fixed gear and the other being retractable. I believe I’ve read that the landing gear on Mooneys are far less expensive than most other RG aircraft...

Need a recommendation for a Florida airport

Another airport is Herlong. (KHEG). It’s uncontrolled but is surrounded by Class D from other airports. I’ve flown in for the weekend and wasn’t charged a ramp fee (though I did purchase fuel; not sure if that’s why). A very good GA airport as far as I’m concerned.

    Best single-seat aircraft

While I would prefer being able to carry a passenger, it seems that single-seaters are more affordable. What are some single-seaters that still have decent cruise speed/ x-country performance (130+ kt)? There are loads of ultralight aircraft, but almost all of them are too slow. Of course...

    RV-9 with Rotax 915

To get a bit off topic, how do you think the 915 would do on an RV 3 or 4? According to previous posts, the 915 would need to be mounted farther forward. Essentially, the engine is a bit too light (915 is 185 lbs., 0-235 is 246 lbs.). Would it be too light on the 3 or 4? And even though the...

Planning a trip to Airventure 2022

Agreed! Staying a bit further out means maybe a third the price than if you stay close. I’m actually staying in Marinette, but as I’m driving from South Georgia, the drive won’t seem long by comparison. It’s weird how 41 seems to become more of a 4-lane highway rather than an interstate the...

    New Raptor aircraft at SnF?

Ok, it turns out it was “Rapture” Aircraft, not “Raptor”. https://www.recreationalflying.com/topic/37700-the-rapture-aircraft-turbine-bug/ While I was interested in the design (sadly I never asked the price), I had no luck in my Google search and thought I was losing my mind. :D. If it’s not...
