    Liberty/Discovery XL 2

I’ve always been satisfied with the space of a Skyhawk and Cherokee cockpit. Not overly spacious, but not uncomfortable. A heavyset CFI can make it a bit tight, but it’s not terrible. On the other hand, I’ve around 30-40 hrs in a C150, and that cockpit is just too small. Even when flying...

What makes a booth at OSH good?

I had this problem when I visited the Merlin aircraft (the single-seat LSA) booth. When I stopped by at SnF, no one was there. When I stopped at OSH, the 1 or 2 guys there were in an in-depth conversation with no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

    Liberty/Discovery XL 2

Here is a certified, 2-seat aircraft I didn’t realize existed until recently. Does anyone have any experience in owning or flying this aircraft? Could this be an affordable aircraft for someone on a budget? It looks like the cockpit is quite roomy for a 2-seater. According to Wikipedia...

How short is too short of a flight?

I was listening to a Mike Busch with Savvy Aviation on YT, and in one of his videos he mentions that starting the engine and running it up for a few minutes to prevent underuse is actually bad for the engine, even worse than not having started it at all. He even further states that actually...

    RV-7A completed youtube build log

Has the OP considered a Zenith CH 650? It’s a low-wing and while still not comparable with an RV in airspeed (perhaps it comes close to matching the -12), it’s the fastest aircraft Zenith offers; considerably faster than a 750. Some with the larger engines are said to true out at over 120 kts...

Highest cruise altitude in an AA5?

When it comes to the Grumman Traveler/Cheetah/Tiger line, much has been discussed about performance in regards to takeoff and climb rates. But I’m curious, how do these aircraft do in cruise at high altitudes, perhaps 10,500 to 11,500? What are the true airspeed like? I’m sure it can largely...

    Weather forecasts aren’t getting better

I live in the south GA area, so I’ve been getting some of this weather as well. It seems like during spring and early summer, it can be clear & sunny, and 30 minutes later it’ll be pouring rain. Another 30 minutes later it’s sunny again. Also it can be pouring on one side of town, but folks...

How important is a paint job?

Very true. It could be that it’s flown and maintained regularly, it was simply never hangared and the owner(s) didn’t wax regularly. And then it could be like you say, it’s sat and deteriorated over the years.

How important is a paint job?

https://www.barnstormers.com/listing_images.php?id=1820962 This is an aircraft that could use a paint job. However, would it be a bad idea to not bother spending money on paint (at least for several years)? Could the deplorable exterior lead to problems that may render the aircraft...

    Rotax 916

Am I missing something? Can Rotax be run at full horsepower continuously, despite what the manufacturer says? I read that the 916 is capable of 160 hp during takeoff, but only has 137 continuous hp, which is hardly better than the 135 continuous hp of the 915. Can the 915 run at 141 hp full...

    Rotax 916

Wrong. It has 160 hp during takeoff, but the continuous horsepower is only 137, a grand whopping total of two extra hp than the 915.

Which states are most affordable for aviation?

A few months back, someone posted that they had moved from Indiana to Florida, and that their hangar rent was around $200 in IN, but would be over $700 in Florida (I don’t remember which airports, or the exact number for hangar price), so as with anything else, the cost can largely depend on...

Towing your aircraft to/from the self-serve pump?

Same. And I’m pretty sure if there were a mandate, the worst I’d get is a warning to quit doing it. However, if it were a busier airport with several other aircraft taxiing around, I could see it being a potential problem. Then again, a busier airport would most likely be available with full-serve.

Towing your aircraft to/from the self-serve pump?

If you’re based at an airport that is self-serve only, is there any rule or mandate against just towing the airplane to the pump before beginning the flight, or towing the aircraft from the pump to the hangar or ramp? The idea is to avoid having to startup, and then shutdown 2 minutes later. I...

What is cheaper, a new airplane or an old one?

Holy dooly. And the A36 is retractable-gear, something that drives up annual costs vs. most fixed+gear aircraft.

What is cheaper, a new airplane or an old one?

Pay $150k+ for a newer aircraft vs $70k or lower for an older one. That $80k+ could have payed for a lot of repairs. And if you pay over $300k for an almost new one (I believe a brand new Skyhawk & Archer are over $400k now), that could’ve bought an engine overhaul, avionics upgrade, and a new...

    Your Dumbest Benign Moment

One thing I’ve done is attempt to use the flaps as speed brakes on landing. Even though I was trained to use 30 degrees of flaps (Cessna 172), and 20 degrees during x-winds, the aircraft could extend to 40. If I was a bit fast on short final, I’d extend to 40 degrees, then retract back to 30...
