    Tips On Troubleshooting Oil Leak

I don't believe this. Are you aware that RTV silicon sealant is the standard way of sealing in automotive automotive engines often in place of any gasket. Auto technology is years ahead of primitive aero engine technology. Why is it still being used in auto engines if it causes problems? I have...

    Tips On Troubleshooting Oil Leak

I should probably just write this up but it's very simple. Take of valve cover and using Q-tips completely and thoroughly clean out that channel between the upper valve tube seal washer and the cylinder head. Lacquer thinner for a final clean. Completely fill the channel with high temperature...

    Tips On Troubleshooting Oil Leak

Yes, these commonly leak at the upper end and almost never leak at the crankcase end due to Continental's dumb design. So if you want to fix you can replace the upper seal for hundreds of dollars of labor and may still have a leak or you can use my 100% successful method for one hour or less...

    Best GA airplane?

On a transatlantic flight I sat behind a FAA test pilot and we had a long discussion and he rated the C-210 as number one all around. Yes, I have had a 1964 model (with wing struts) for 40 years and can't imagine exchanging it except that Cessna's insane parts prices might force me to.

    New Normal Mag Drop?

So iPhones are free? Actually, my system is often zero cost If you have a piece of wood around that will fit in the plug hole.

    New Normal Mag Drop?

So what are you going to do to fix the problem? Of course the word "overhaul" is nebulous but it's hard to imagine that any new replaced parts would be inferior on both mags to the original so the only thing left is adjustment and, on my 50+ year old Slicks, the only adjustments are the internal...

Small fuel loads, risks and limits

If you have two tanks and REALLY want know fly the plane in all realistic flight positions with very little fuel in one tank, at altitude, until engine cuts out. Switch to other tank and measure remaining fuel in "empty" tank. One test is worth a thousand opinions. Or just wonder.

    New Normal Mag Drop?

I vote E-gap also which is when the points open in relation to the magneto vs. when points open in relation to the crankshaft position.

    Mountain Flying Course

I love flying the Mountain West, the most beautiful part of the country in my opinion. It's great that many will take such a course; however, if your plane has a high ceiling (mine is 21K) and you land at airports with long runways and stick to very good WX it's safe for a flatlander to fly...

Where to have a Field Overhaul

I am sure glad I majored my engine myself. It cost me 1/2 or less and I did not need to ship it anywhere. I am surprised that mechanics shy away from this. These are really simple 1935 technology tractor engines. Large displacement and slow turning. Late model cars are a different story. Very...

    Mountain Flying Course

If you would like to avoid the Aspen airport price gouging but want to visit Aspen fly into Glenwood Springs and take the bus to Aspen. They run about every half hour and are fast (for a bus) and charge $6.00, free for seniors. You can take your bags on board. I have a place at Aspen (actually...

Poll...Should Radios Be Required At Non-Towered Airports?

If there is a UNICOM frequency I will call or, if not but the airport is busy the a blind call on 122.8. Not all airplanes have working or not radios but all pilots have eye(s).

    Temperature and cruise questions

If you are really concerned about CHT I recommend that you verify accuracy oy your gauge. I use a lab type mercury thermometer in a oil bath on a hot plate.

Piston Singles easily serviced outside of the US (Latin America)?

The C-182 is probably the most popular in Latin America or the 172. Also carrying a spare cylinder assembly with base nut wrenches is a good idea. Spare parts aboard is usually allowed. And a tool kit is also a must.
