New CFI (Me) and my Son

Excellent suggestions, and I'll use whatever excuse works to get airborne. Many thanks!

New CFI (Me) and my Son

This sounds like a definite possibility worth looking into. I've always been vaguely familiar with the CAP mission and I always see the CAP airplane at GAI (it's parked next to the rental airplanes I fly). I didn't realize the scope of the flying opportunities to cadets. A great idea and I had...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

Well stated, thanks for revealing what has probably been the biggest doubt in the back of my mind about this, specifically that for whatever reason the dual instruction I provide would be inefficient, where the per-hour result would be less than it normally otherwise would or should be. These...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

Thanks to everyone for your responses all good points to consider. I believe I can answer some of these concerns. I should clarify that I never intended to be in the right seat without prior verbal and written approval from the flight school and with the associated insurance requirements...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

After a 38-year flying career (22 USAF and 16 airline), I retired and took what turned out to be a nearly 3-year break from aviation. I began with a PPL prior to the USAF and remained active in General Aviation pretty much throughout my career, mostly renting at whatever airport happened to be...

Best Insurance Carrier (Underwriter) for Senior Pilots?

The was an interesting opinion piece in a recent issue of General Aviation News about this very subject with commentary to follow. https://generalaviationnews.com/2023/03/30/one-pilots-view-the-fear-of-not-flying/

    How are professional pilots scored?

If there's any kind of a discriminator in the airlines other than seniority, it would be the role of a check airman (that has minimum experience requirements for selection, then incurs additional training); once qualified, they provide instruction in both the simulator and aircraft (initial and...

    airliner actual weight vs GTOW?

Yes, it’s all about the CG. The 800, with its longer fuselage (therefore longer moment arms) when lightly loaded, needs to have passengers arranged into zones, (which can also be affected by the cargo bay loads) to keep the CG within limits. A full or near-full 800 isn’t nearly as affected since...

What was the first aviation related book that you read?

Famous Planes and Pilots, by James A, Hathaway, a Junior Golden Guide, copyright 1963, 4x5 inches and 47 pages. I think I was 4 years old when my older brother handed it down to me, I still have it.

Yes definitely! You won’t be disappointed.

    What Are You Reading?

Black Thursday, by Martin Caidin, the story of the Schweinfurt raid, October 1943. I'm about halfway through and it's quite gripping, made even more so in the knowledge that it's non-fiction. Included are detailed insights in B-17 operations, but that's a mere sideline to the graphic depiction...

    Returning to GA

Harry Callahan said it best, "A man's got to know his limitations." I kept that in mind after a 3-year hiatus, getting re-current (along with a biennial flight review) in a C-172M finally just last week. My biggest challenges were getting used to a GNS 430 and an Aspen EFD100 PFD and...

    Southwest back in the news

Having retired from SWA the summer of 2020 after taking a pandemic-driven early retirement offer (that was just too good to refuse), I can attest to the overly-long history if IT related and overall operational issues. We thought the lesson was learned in 2014 after the Chicago Midway meltdown...

    Is a medical even possible?

You might consider a "consultation" with an AME who could give you a clearer picture of where you stand and what you need to do without doing the actual MedXpress application.

    Hello from Maryland!

That's true, they actually work out of all three locations, I think GAI is their smallest operation. And thanks everyone for the welcomes!

    Hello from Maryland!

Sounds like another reason to hold out for Davis or consider FDK! Excellent... a future destination for us I'm sure. Sounds good and I know Bravo flies out of both GAI and FDK which would expand rental availability, but I'll look into more FDK options. May I ask which club you were in? I was...

    Hello from Maryland!

Thanks for the info! I think you may be referring to WIFA, they look like a pretty large (and higher priced) outfit. I have it narrowed down to either Davis or Bravo. The only problem with Davis is they can be hard to get a hold of; their phone doesn’t even have an answering machine! (or voicemail)

Hello! Do you fly with Bravo Flight Training? If so, how do you like it?
