    I hate my January annuals

26 weeks - yikes! I thought I had it bad when a remanufactured IO360 from Lycoming took 17 weeks for me about a year ago. If it were mine, I would fly your present engine, checking the oil and filter more frequently. As others have said, it will not die suddenly on you. Order the new engine and...

    KLN94 still supported?

I have a 2001 DA40 with the KLN94 and KAP140. Both still work well, and I can still update the GPS database.

    Aircraft Spruce

Aircraft Spruce has always been good with me. Plus, if you are active or retired military they give you a discount. Anywhere from 2-5%, depending on the item...

Do You Carry a Spare Tire and Tube All the Time?

I carry a main gear tube and nose gear tube. No tires. Weighs a few pounds. Rationale is that the tube is the part most likely to fail, and not be available at the location where the failure occurs. Tools, jack, air pump are much easier and quicker to obtain locally.

    Zaon MRX, XRX

Batteries. The 2 AA Duracells last about 10-12 hours of use, so in my case, about 6-8 flights, depending. I carry a bunch of AAs in my flight bag, and changing the batteries in flight takes about 30 sec max.

    406 ELT

Same here. I upgraded from the E-01. Only installation issue I had was getting the GPS position into the ELT via RS-232. Turned out to be a bad chip in the GPS.

Do you have a CO detector? I replaced my clock with a CO Guardian -553 about 15 years ago. It has Clock, timer, and other functions in addition to the CO detector. Won't drain your battery. The only downside is the requirement to replace the CO sensor every 5 years...

    Hard starting IO-360

Mine has the 3 cm index throttle position required for a warm start, cold is 1 cm. My POH is 20 years old (as is my airplane), there may have been revisions...

    Hard starting IO-360

I have an IO-360 in my DA40. POH states to run electric fuel pump, completely open throttle, then open mixture for 2-5 seconds (which I vary based on ambient temperature), mixture to ICO, then return throttle to 1/2 inch open, electric fuel pump off, then crank. When it fires, briskly advance...

    Need engine advice/help...

"...Going through my Mooney engine this way cost less than $20K and was done by a meticulous engine builder. This included fresh Slicks. I expect that I saved some because I did the leg work sourcing parts and such. BTW, this was a zero time overhaul." I thought that only the OEM could...

Overflying Mexico, to Whom do I Owe Money Edition

Many TX pilots have LTCs (as of Dec 31, 2020, there were 1.62 million LTCs in TX). When flying in the desert Southwest, a firearm is survival gear. I have flown S TX to S AZ many times over ELP, and have refused routing over Mexico. I have also overflown the class C to avoid the issue.

    KAP 140 Check Pitch Trim

Yes, that is the one. If you have a membership to SCRIBD, there is a Maintenance Manual for the KAP 140 you could download: https://www.scribd.com/document/127825890/KAP-140-MM I believe you could download it for free with a trial membership.

    KAP 140 Check Pitch Trim

There is a KAP 140 Field Maintenance Manual that has a lot of good info for troubleshooting. I found it somewhere on the internet for download as a .pdf some years ago. I could email you a copy if you send me your email address...

    KAP 140 Check Pitch Trim

That is a weird situation. You have already switched out a (presumably) known good FCC, and that didn't fix the problem. The last thing that was worked on was the Pitch servo, and the failure mode changed after this. I would check all of the wiring between the FCC and Pitch servo including the...

    KAP 140 Check Pitch Trim

The other thing that can cause the computer to PT fail at PFT 3 is an open AP disconnect switch circuit (red button) - ask me how I know this . You should be able to spot this with the diagnostic terminal plugged in, or if you want to try yourself, just short the switch (both of them...

    KAP 140 Check Pitch Trim

There are two servos in the pitch system of the KAP140 - Pitch servo and Pitch Trim servo. Did they check both of them? The other thing that can lead to Pitch trim faults is excessive friction in the (manual) pitch trim system. Can you run your pitch trim to the limits both ways without undue...

    Do not buy Garmin GDL-50

I am somewhat surprised that Garmin wouldn't exchange your unit (even if it is out of warranty) simply to get your failed unit to autopsy. If they are still selling the unit, it could allow them to find a problem that would save them some warranty claims... But, then again...

Continental IO-360K 43yr old oil dipstick replaced under warranty

In 2016, Lycoming came out with an MSB for the dipstick on IO360-M series engines (I have one). Apparently, at indications of 5 quarts and less, the dipstick over-reported the amount of oil in the engine. It was replaced under warranty (the engine was 15 years old at the time).
