What is the most cost effective solution to ADSB out?

Not a big Garmin fan, but SkyBeacon wouldn't work with my aircraft due to configuration of my wingtip lights. Wound up installing the GDL-82 during an Annual Inspection while the interior was out, and its has worked flawlessly since then (4 years). I have a 23 year old transponder (KT-76C).

    Battery Contactor Questions

My DA40 is wired exactly as B&C shows it, as apparently many (most) manufacturers do. I wouldn't substitute my electrical engineering knowledge and experience for theirs...

    ATC asks me for winds.

I've never been asked, but I can do it on my ancient KLN-94, with a lot of knob twirling and button pushing. Having said that, I frequently do set up the calculation once I'm settled in cruise, and the AP is doing all the hard work....

Stay away of FlightLevel Aviation / Chris LaPlante at KOWD

Why not do an Annual as the "Prebuy". Yeah, it might cost a bit more, but no surprises like the OP had. Buyer pays for the inspection, seller pays to correct Airworthiness issues, buyer can deal with non-Airworthiness issues as he sees fit.

Exploring Texas with my boys! Looking for any recommendations.

Palo Duro canyon for sure - Fly into Amarillo -KAMA. The museum in Canyon is also a great visit if you need to be indoors for a few hours. Big bend is great - Fly into Alpine. Rental cars are available. Also, Guadalupe Mountains National Park - tallest peak in TX - about 4 hours round trip if...

    No oil filters available.....

I ordered a couple of Champions from Spruce in late August. At that time, they expected to ship in early October. Still waiting, and now expected in stock December 9. I had a couple in the hangar, sold one to a friend who needed one more than I needed two. Luckily, scored a case of the Tempests...

    No Polarization Sunglasses

Consider yourself lucky then (or it isn't noticeable to you). I've seen it in many military and civilian aircraft models (did a study in 1989-90 on laser glare through aircraft windscreens at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory).

    No Polarization Sunglasses

Ophthalmologist and former Naval Flight Surgeon here - we advise against polarized sunglasses mainly because the windscreens on most aircraft are stressed plastic material, which acts as a polarizer. Wearing polarized sunglasses (the analyzer) can generate irregular chromatic aberrations in your...

Supply chain and Overhauls. Who is affected and how?

I bought a Lycoming rebuilt (zero-time) IO360 in November, 2020. It was delivered in February, 2021 (after the delivery date slipped about a month in several installments). I had my engine off the mount long before the new one was delivered, and all of the accessories (oil cooler, prop governor)...

    Passenger killed while deplaning 8/7

Rgbeard's picture brought back a very disturbing memory from my earlier life. I was a Flight Surgeon in a P3 squadron in the early 80s at Moffett Field. Shortly after reporting for duty, I was reviewing an accident report from a couple of years earlier, involving a crew member who walked into a...

Ever have to replace a spark plug away from home?

I carry one in my on-board tool kit. Only time I thought I would have to replace one was a bad mag check that wouldn't clear by leaning during run-up. Pulled the plug and it turned out to be a big carbon flake between the (massive) electrodes. Just cleaned it out, and was good to go with the old...

    Abusive Vectoring

I haven't experienced "Abusive" vectoring, but have experienced "Forgetful" vectoring a couple of times. Once, flying into KPNS, the controller sent me what seemed like halfway to Cuba over the Gulf, until I reminded him that I was enroute to Pensacola, not Havana. The other time a controller at...

Silly Question time - all white wire?

Actually, one really nice thing about the wiring harnesses in my DA40 is that every wire is labelled (laser marked) every 6 inches or so. I have done some avionics work on the airplane over the years and the combination of having comprehensive wiring diagrams and labelled wires makes...
