The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) - New FAA Drone Exam

Ahhh, the FAA again trying to ruin an aviation-related hobby. Nice!

    Solar power

We have solar water too. It's ok - a lot of people here in Northern AZ have let their systems go. We still use it and it does a good job, just doesn't seem as popular for some reason. It's basically a pre-heater that requires a second water heater. This heated water then goes into the 2nd water...

Thinking about a dual sport/adventure Motorcycle

Something to keep in mind - the BMW GS 650 twins are 800cc engines. Comparing them to the GS650 single or other ~650s won't be very fair.

VFR out of North Las Vegas

I've always found Las Vegas approach really easy to work with. You shouldn't have any issues getting out.

    Solar power

I agree with what others have said about the environmental costs being offloaded to other countries. While I'm in favor of reasonable environmental regulations, the fact that we don't force our trade partners to follow the same rules means that we just send the manufacturing and pollution to...

    Solar power

Here in Northern AZ, solar is getting more popular. Everyone can tie into the grid where it's possible (some areas don't have electric available at all). The solar plans offered by the power company have gotten worse over time. I have an 8KW system and get to sell unused power back to the power...

Thinking about a dual sport/adventure Motorcycle

Riding dirt and trials has made me a much better rider overall. If the plan is mostly dirt with a way to legally get from trail to trail, a dual sport is the way to go. Anything from a 250-450 (as mentioned above, more power is not always helpful in the dirt). Honestly, my 350 is way more than I...

Thinking about a dual sport/adventure Motorcycle

Dual sport: KTM 350 EXC-F Adventure: BMW F850 GS I love my KTM EXC-F! Biggest problem with it is buying parts if they break ($$$). Biggest problem buying another dual sport - by the time you've paid to upgrade everything to be as nice as the stock KTM, you've paid the same as the KTM! I also...

    Question about Cirrus Pilots

Finally the voice of reason!!!! Columbia failed because they were based in the same FSDO as Boeing, and were held to impossibly high standards that raised the certification costs beyond reason. Then they got destroyed by an untimely hail storm with new planes being stored outside waiting for...

How to insert flight track data into GoPro video

The issue I've had with the GoPro telemetry data is when you have multiple files it resets the data. So instead of showing the whole track for the flight, it restarts at the new file. The gauges are great though. I'd love a workaround for the tracking data.

Best plane for mission: South FL to MGMM Flores, Guatemala

I'm confused - you mention 800nm distance, but then talk about full fuel carrying capacity. You will rule out several planes with big tanks because of this. A Columbia 300 or 350 could do this with less-than-full tanks, as could my 400.

How often do you update your Garmin databases?

When I pay for it, I try to update every cycle. But there have been long periods of time when I haven't re-upped my subscription. I can't understand the 40 min update time though. My G1000 does it in well under a minute for both PFD and MFD.

How often have you used a cell phone in the air?

Texts quite often. I usually don't have good enough reception for calls except when departing or landing. I also had to connect my kid's wifi from his chromebook to give him more time recently.

Constant Speed Prop - Descent Settings

I don't fly an Arrow, but I always pull the prop back for descent while I slowly decrease MAP. Saves gas, and I'm cheap. Prop all the way in when it's off the stops as some others have said.
