Missing Cessna 210 - Colorado to Utah

Thanks for that link. Very interesting. I recently moved from Alaska to Northern New Mexico and fly in the Rockies frequently. I have mountain flying experience from AK, but not so much the high density alt. mountain flying. To hear about a very capable aircraft like a turbocharged Baron...

    Buying my first plane PA-32-300

Congratulations! I love the Cherokee 6. Very capable aircraft. Owning a two-seat experimental now after flying a C185 for 20+ years, I really miss the load hauling ability. You'll get some disagreement, but IMO, covered shelter is great. I stored aircraft outside on tiedowns in coastal...

    Mogas

That IS interesting. Do you run 93/E10 regularly? Do you mix it with 100LL? When researching certified STCs, I had read that the 0-320/150hp was OK with mogas and the 160hp version was not. Also I noted that vapor pressure problems were more likely with low wing airplanes due to lower line...

    Mogas

Yeah, we do have a lakeside marina that carries "real" gasoline, but it is 30+ miles away. My real issue is my higher compression 0-320 and a low-wing airplane. Mogas not recommended as far as I can tell.

    Mogas

To the OP- in your situation, I would definitely be burning mogas. An A&P/IA friend of mine with a O-540 powered Bearhawk has been running a mix of 80% mogas/ 20% 100LL for a couple of years, and really likes it. Unfortunately, I have an 0-320/160hp in a low wing aircraft with no mogas on the...

The perfect GA airplane, in my opinion (looking for critique)

You are right IMO, a chute could be a huge asset in many emergency situations. It is also a pretty big liability. It is expensive to buy initially and expensive to maintain. A $15k repack every 10 years is a major disadvantage, more than most owners need to save for engine overhaul reserves...

Airplane parking for a month in Anchorage?

As mentioned, Merrill Field or Lake Hood Strip are fairly close. Merrill Field(PAMR) is paved, on the other side of town(20 minutes) from Ted Stevens International and busier than Lake Hood strip(Z41). I'm not sure, but I would assume Lake Hood strip parking would be a little easier to get and...

    Low Time Engine ?

This would be the ideal solution, but could be difficult to do in practice, with someone else's airplane with other buyers likely in the wings. I had a similar situation on my last airplane purchase. As someone else suggested, you could check the logs to see when the last oil change was and get...

What the $%#% ... Brokers Selling Planes

Like @Grum.Man, I had a lot calls and emails. Scanning and sending a lot of photos and documents to "interested" parties. Our little town is pretty out of the way, so I only had one person come to see the airplane at my home base and he did not buy. The actual buyer put a substantial deposit...

What the $%#% ... Brokers Selling Planes

I sold a Tiger and bought an RV last April. I ran into *exactly* the same situation with a broker. I wanted a -7 or a -9 and hadn't been around them at all. One broker, can't remember the name for sure but sounds like it might be the same guy, had three RV's listed but told me that I couldn't...

    UFO members??

The guy I bought my RV from last year was 81 and an M.D., still working. He sold the RV because he wasn't using it much, and had recently picked up a nice C182. He was only working a few days a month, but he said he enjoyed it and it helped keep him sharp. He checked me out in the RV...

    My Vans RV conundrum.

Well, that's not good. I didn't read through all of the links, but it doesn't sound like he had issues with the nose gear in this incident. "Abandoned airport, runway overrun, minor damage." Stuff like that happens, if you want to operate on unimproved airfields. I know that I had one or two...

    My Vans RV conundrum.

I don't believe Van's has redesigned or fixed the nose gear on their 6A, 7A, 8A, or 9A models. I do wish the nose gear was huskier, but I haven't had any issues with it (knock on wood) in the 100 hrs I have flown my RV-9A. I did have some shimmy problems with the Tiger I owned. One of the...

    My Vans RV conundrum.

After partnering with my brother on many different airplanes over the years (Citabria, Scout, C310, Viking, C185..) I moved away, planned to downsize, go for lower mx and fuel costs, and bought a Tiger. I liked it a lot, but my home base is at 6000 msl and the density altitude is usually above...

    Questions- Looking at a 64' C-150 D For Sale

I think that will be a lot more fun than a 150. I spent 700 hrs instructing in 150/152s, great, honest airplanes but not exciting. No time in AA1s but have owned AA5As and Bs, the handling and pilot view is excellent, just lots of fun. Easier transition to higher performance birds later, IMO...

    Starter airplanes for under $30,000

That Sundowner looks nice! Like a few have mentioned, Grummans are are a good choice. 3 years ago, I bought a solid 77 Tiger for 30.5k. Flew it a couple of years with no issues and sold it for 31k. Great airplane, quick, efficient, fun to fly, low maintenance. Service ceiling was a little low...

Flying the Chicago Skyline and a bit of wind shear on landing

Another great video. Thanks. I fly an RV9A and have found that controllers seem to appreciate my identifying as "RV" vs experimental. As mentioned above, how the plane is manufactured is not as important as how it is shaped (for tower controllers) and how it performs, and that was probably...

Should All Certified Airplane Default to the Experimental Category After 20 Years?

I don't doubt there are glitches in the 406 system but I'm sure it is orders of magnitude more efficient than the 121.5 approach. Just being able to glance at an activation on a map and see it is located at an airport (or not) would greatly help with prioritizing response. And there is a...

Should All Certified Airplane Default to the Experimental Category After 20 Years?

I was told the main reason they stopped listening to 121.5 ELTs was that 90+% of the activations were bogus but they had to be tracked down anyway. And tracking them down was much more difficult because ELT owner information was not available and the location had to be determined by...

I see now why lots of planes have old avionics

Very true. But in my case, I really like everything about the airplane except the avionics...:) Experimentals are a little better, but I still experienced major sticker shock. I just got a quote(from a shop with a good reputation) to purchase and install a Dynon Skyview 10" display, ADHRS, 4...
