    Bush Taildraggers... The guide

Flying qualities are subjective. My impressions are pretty much opposite of yours. I owned a 185 and a Bellanca Scout for 20 + years in Alaska. I also flew Supercubs quite a bit. No time in a Husky or Carbon Cub. I loved my Scout and put 1200 or so hours on it, but, while it is a capable...

Help me understand the costs of updating a panel

In answer to the original question- I am not an expert on upgrade costs, but have gotten a 2 bids in the past year. Audio panels are not expensive for the hardware, but the install is extensive (and very expensive). And you didn't say what type of nav comm capability you want ( ILS?). There...

Help me understand the costs of updating a panel

I agree 100%. ... If you can do it that way. In my case, I found almost exactly the airplane I wanted, perfect shape, great engine, great paint, great price, and 60 miles away! The purchase was quick and painless. But... the panel was nothing like what really wanted. 2 years later, I...

    Found a buyer now what

Good luck. Hope everything goes well with the sale. My recent(a couple of years ago) plane sale story: hadn't sold an airplane in many years, other than to a close relative. A buyer, about 500 miles away, was "very interested" in my Grumman. We talked, emailed, a lot, I sent recent logbook...

Bellanca crash, crosswind got him, 3 people uninjured, plane was definitely injured.

Agree there was a light quartering tailwind. But to me, it looks like he just flew it hard into the ground. I can't see any sort of pitch up or flare in the last 30 ft. of his descent... that just doesn't work. If it was low IAS due to the tailwind, leading to a stall, you would still see...

Man builds and flys his own ViperJet Mk II

That's for sure. $1.5M + 12,000 hrs labor to build. Asking price $595K... But, one heck of an accomplishment.

ASES, Is it worth the time and trouble. How many have & don't use?

I think it comes down to: 1) It would be fun and educational to do; 2) You could avoid the flight review by completing the rating; 3) Floatplanes will be very difficult to find as rentals, so you likely won't use it much; 4) But ... if you DO find yourself with access to a floatplane or...

    IO-550 Upgrade: real-world performance improvements

Congrats on the upgrade! I imagine you are seeing a nice improvement in takeoff and climb performance as well?

    Midair near Soldotna, AK

Not sure. A lot of Cubs, PA12s and PA14s in Alaska have experimental placards due to modifications. That could be the situation. It wouldn't be the Beaver because it is used in an air taxi operation.

    Midair near Soldotna, AK

Yeah. The first few online and TV stories all said Aztec and Beaver with no crash photos. When the photos became available, it was obvious the smaller plane was not an Aztec. That will teach me to quote early news articles. Turns out I knew both of the pilots involved.

    Midair near Soldotna, AK

Beaver on floats from a local flying service and a small Piper. 7 total passengers. 6 fatalities so far. I have met the pilot of the Aztec. He was a local contractor and politician. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/aviation/2020/07/31/planes-collide-in-midair-near-soldotna-ntsb-says/

    Question for controllers

Here is another C172 attack. Guy was mad at his wife....!? I was in Anchorage at the time, I remember the incident well. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/anchorage/2016/06/20/fbi-cap-pilot-intentionally-crashed-plane-into-anchorage-building/

Be a CFI in my old age?

Yeah, I definitely wish I would have kept my CFI/II certs current. I have always been an active pilot but after I quit instructing, I got busy and ended up letting them go. Before internet training was available....working in remote parts of Alaska...it just wasn't "convenient". And I was...

    Buy to finish training

The 206 is a fantastic airplane. I owned a 185(same wing and engine) for a many years and have time in 206's. Super utility, lift almost anything you can fit in them, not slow/not fast. The maintenance costs are quite reasonable if you get a good engine and take care of it correctly. But...

Grumman Tiger Vs Mooney M20C or E

The thing is, you just don't have much of a 4-passenger airplane with 180 hp. Especially in the case of a Tiger with its fixed prop. Takeoff and climb performance is just not there, IMO. A Mooney is no doubt better, with its constant speed. I guess if you have low density altitude airports...

Be a CFI in my old age?

I was considering this myself. I worked as a flight instructor for a while when I was in my 20's and enjoyed it. I thought of reinstating my CFI/CFII credentials and doing some instructing when I retire in the next year or two. But the extremely litigious environment in our country may very...

Grumman Tiger Vs Mooney M20C or E

Had a Tiger for a while. Sold it 3 years ago to get an RV-9. Very little experience in Mooneys. Things I liked about the Tiger: very low maintenance costs in my experience, insurance was inexpensive, it was fairly fast and economical (over 130kts on 8-9 gal/hr-- would do 135kts if you burned...

    iFly 720?

I like the one I have. Had it 4 years, first in a Tiger, now an RV. Annual data subscriptions are inexpensive, $80 VFR/ $130 VFR+IFR. If the subscription expires, it keeps working (but warns you on every flight). Screen is bright, unit is easy to use. Works well.

Poll...Should Radios Be Required At Non-Towered Airports?

I, too, hate the MANDATE part. I have been flying for many decades, mostly in Alaska. I am careful to use CTAF comms whenever possible, even when landing on lakes. But I oppose adding more regulations and required equipment just because someone thinks it might save a life someday. As @wanttaja...
