Another one of those "small planes", crash near Palo Alto CA.

Good for you. But we can also sump our tanks and verify. I routinely trust the FBOs to do the right thing. But verify via pre-flight checklists. Never had an issue, but I do realize there are issues that others have experienced so we must all be aware, even if you fuel your own plane.

Touch & goes or stop & go?

So normal takeoffs are destroying engines also? I would hazard a guess that over-leaning in general causes more damage to cylinders than T&Gs ever will.

172 down 1/2 mile from Akron, OH airport

Link FlightAware shows one flight the morning of lasting approximately 2 hours. Then the accident flight was approximately 3 hours. I think the bigger news is that two people were pulled alive from that and taken to a hospital.

Age When You Passed Inst. Check Ride

I'm working on it. 50-something. Last flight with double-I we did unusual attitudes. My first thought was seriously my friend? A 60 something bank and dive or whatever and my body didn't have a clue what was going on? Recovered satisfactorily but need more work on that.

BE35 down at VUO (Vancouver WA), 1 fatal

ughhh. Do you ever wonder when you get lucky? Or end up as a post on a random aviation site? I know I got lucky once. Many years ago. The traditional VMC to IMC. Got lucky in that I knew for a fact an airport was directly at my six. Descending 180, maintaining control, found the runway after...

Learned about wake turbulence the hard way

One of the airports I fly out of has frequent Apache ops. I stay the heck away from them, and communicate specifically to understand exactly what they are doing. Never had to divert but I am always prepared to execute a diversion to give them all the space they need. The pilots are always...

    Are you a safe pilot?

If I remember right you fly military grade stuff? Or did. Your opinions weigh heavily for me. Narcissists don’t know their limits. Either they are tamed or they perish as a result of arrogance. At some point. Or are very lucky I guess. I came close to failing my ppl checkride. The DPE was...

    Are you a safe pilot?

Sage comments. I stuck in a landing that wasn’t my best and the pilot in the pattern behind me wisely went around. It’s a decision process that is never constant. I’m not glider rated but it’s something I’ve considered just for the experience.

    Are you a safe pilot?

Paul, so where is the difference between safe and perfect? Of course we are humans so nothing is perfect. My father was a commercial pilot. He invited me along on a flight when he was flying freight in a tail wheel DC aircraft. (back in the day before things were strict-ish) … I was about 15...

    Are you a safe pilot?

Just curious, what shouldn’t have happened? Be specific … I’m not being sensitive. I want to learn.

    Are you a safe pilot?

I like to think I am. But after reading so many botched pilot stuff on this forum it’s hard to quantify. My latest was a horrible landing attempt in a 172 with a CFI aboard. Go around was an easy decision. Done several of those in my time. If it’s not looking good you can always go around...

Young pilot dies after takeoff trouble - Cessna 152

On my solo (172) my cfi may or may not have had a walkie. If he did I didn’t hear a peep. But I did at least 3 satisfactory landings before he let me loose that day.

Young pilot dies after takeoff trouble - Cessna 152

With full flaps even a reduction of one notch in a 150 results in some sink. You have to go by increments and let the plane settle. If he went full flaps up I can imagine it becomes the scenario where you see the ground getting closer and just start yanking back on the yoke.

    Drinking while flying...

I fly with the insulated straw flip ups. Take a sip and put it back in my flight bag or wherever I have it stowed. On longer trips I’ll usually bring a Gatorade to sip also. Don’t overdo hydration. I’ve never had to land to run to the head. Except once. Was split timing a flight with a friend...
