Chinese Spy Balloon Flying Over the U.S.

lol. Thanks for the sensible chuckle. It’s why I have reservations about this site at times. Quite a few loony toons think they know stuff.

Chinese Spy Balloon Flying Over the U.S.

I was a sub nuke in the navy. I won’t share details but plenty of people know those details. You people having their boxers in a bunch over intel “captured” by a meandering balloon have lost their marbles. Like seriously. Calm down. There’s a reason it wasn’t shot down until it was safely out...

Chinese Spy Balloon Flying Over the U.S.

Like what? I’m genuinely curious what important information might have been collected. Other than information we WANTED it to collect.

Chinese Spy Balloon Flying Over the U.S.

The decision to let it go was probably two-fold. (1) No guarantee that bringing it down over land will result in no loss of life or property, and (2) counter-intel. And let me add (3) how many government secrets do you think were exposed by this slowly meandering balloon? In addition, the track...

    Cirrus down near Indianapolis N99EC

Exactly, and if nobody recognizes there is a need for intervention because the person is hiding it … not many options towards prevention at all. Lost a student to suicide some years ago. His parents found him hanging in his bedroom closet. Lost a student a week ago today. Not to suicide but...

What’s in your “emergency go bag”?

Not a flight bag, but your emergency “oops” bag. Attended a CAP presentation on cold weather survival. Three things the presenter suggested having in your pocket are a whistle, pocket knife (with saw blade) and flashlight. That’s just in your cargo pocket. I might also add a glass-breaking...

Free PilotBnB: would you do it?

Short answer: No Why? If I had the accommodations I could charge $300+ easily as an Airbnb. I don’t anyways, but that’s the hypothetical. Additional why not? Pilots are kinda cheap-minded. You might get some 20-year-old slumming it while in flight school or something and need lawyers and such...

    Embraer 505 down KPVU

News Link Just happened this morning, Jan. 2 Embraer 505 headed from KPVU (Provo, UT) to the Rose Bowl (local pilot knowledge so don’t hold that as a fact). Went down after takeoff but impacted on airport property. One fatal. Three injured. Pretty much MVFR in the area but don’t know that’s a factor.

    Why Can't I Understand Holding Patterns.....@#$%!

Was just watching one of the Pilot Edge videos the other day and he mentioned to expect that as well if you are hoping for radar vectors by noting “no SIDs”.

    Non-Direct Flight Following

ATC is helpful to utilize. If you are not going direct tell them your route plan. It’s not a complicated issue. Usually they will offer best routing if possible. At least here. Once wanted to duck lower for a bit of sight seeing and it was a non issue. Controller advised of potential Comm drops...

Does ground/clearance delivery know the phrase "learner pilot"?

I actually tried the free month with them. Maybe I’ll give it another shot. Thanks for the reminder!

Does ground/clearance delivery know the phrase "learner pilot"?

Haven’t heard PTAC before. What is the “turn” component you mentioned?

Does ground/clearance delivery know the phrase "learner pilot"?

I’ll be honest. I’m a “learner” pilot in the middle of IR. I wish there was a way to slow down the clearance. I try to copy but I’m not fast enough yet to keep up with the stream of info. Need more practice I guess.

District employee using school plane for vacation

I’m a teacher with a masters degree in a state that doesn’t require a masters degree. There are two potential benefits, neither of which makes you a better teacher. (1) the pay bump and (2) you might get to teach more advanced classes such as Concurrent Enrollment. Some states require a...

    ATITPPA origin finally discovered?

I actually got complimented by a controller once for having a clear, concise initial call that had everything they needed and nothing else. "Madison Approach, bugsmasher 1234A, Watertown, 4,500, landing with Bravo." Done. I don’t know. When talking to my local bravo when outside I just send my...

    Beech sierra down KEEN

Bit confused … if everything is working correctly the takeoff will continue as briefed. Instruments green, airspeed alive, normal power. Of course, no need to abort. Only rejected one takeoff. Airspeed went through 40 something knots then died off. Most likely a bug got lodged in the pitot...

12 miles WNW of a controlled field, way off centerline, and told to make "straight-in approach"

Like others have said. Fly towards the centerline at your discretion and from there straight in. No downwind. No base. Make for the numbers.

    Weird moment in the cockpit

You aren’t wrong, and that was my sentiment as well, but it is her job to …. protect idiot pilots from themselves sometimes.
