Vy at high (for a NA piston) altitude

If you're running on the light side (2900), try 100 mph. I am in a PA-32-300 (six) and my Vy is 105, like yours... but that's at Max. Vy at 2900 is 100. You probably won't see a major improvement, but that should be your target for Vy if you're running light. It'll probably only shave a...

As I file IFR more...Autopilot options, thoughts

Not very often. Usually I am on GPSS and I dial the altitude in I want to climb/descend to. If I'm being vectored OR I've been give left/right deviation approval, I just use the TRK mode and go cloud dancing. The times I've used the control wheel steering as best I can recall are 2 scenarios...

As I file IFR more...Autopilot options, thoughts

The short answer is - yes, TRK mode on the Aerocruze has been "good enough" when given a heading by ATC. The long answer... I run my GPSS to the Aerocruze direct from my GTN 650 (or 430W as a secondary GPS) most of the time. So my "source" switch is normally over on the GPS (Not the Aspen)...

As I file IFR more...Autopilot options, thoughts

I generally don't have our Aspen driving our AP. If I'm wanting a heading mode, I'll usually just set the Aerocruze 100 to Track Mode and use it to choose a desired track. Knock on wood, I haven't had the red x's show up. Hopefully I can continue that trend. The plane came with the Aspen, so...

As I file IFR more...Autopilot options, thoughts

I had Jesse over at Saint Aviation install an Aerocruze 100 in my PA32. I'm not fluent any any other APs, haven't experienced any others to compare to. But the Aerocruze has been great, I absolutely love it. I had to adjust some of the original settings but it's been flying great. As far as...

So how do I get this cheeseburger everyone talks about?...

I use Foreflight and you're usually able to figure out fees, cost of fuel, etc. The general practice is to waive some/most/all of the landing fees if you buy 10g or so of fuel in a single piston. Foreflight will also tell you if the FBO has a crew car. They usually let you borrow one for a...

IFR bust and frustration - advice needed

I get uncomfortable if I don't fly at least every two weeks, preferably every week if possible. Uncomfortable as-in, I just feel I could be more proficient flying more often. Go out and fly a VFR trip somewhere... just go fly. Remind yourself that you in fact can fly well, have fun, and make...

    Choosing a flight school

Although not ideal, you can always switch instructors or schools if things aren't going the way you want... not ideal, but you're not locked in either. I drove 45 minutes to where my instructor was (I had another option that was 10 minutes door to door). He was part of a flying club so part of...

    Do you tip your CFI?

During my PPL training, I treated to lunch a couple/few times. After my checkride, my instructor congratulated me with a nice bottle of tequila (kind of a flip flop of what's being discussed I guess - LOL). When I did my instrument, I did the 10-day PIC course. The instructor was at my house...

Fibbed to ATC. Got Caught. Was given number to call

I had a NORDO flying IFR over to the Bahamas. Short story is - I never received a handoff. Fortunately, during flight planning, I had a couple frequencies for the general area where it happened. They gave me a phone number to call once I landed. I called Miami and told them the sequence of...

    Instrument Training

I did my instrument training through PIC (10 day course). I already had 5hrs (PPL) prior to starting, did 10 on their simulator, and the remaining 25 with their CFII in the plane under the hood.

I forgot what I disclosed in last medical

I was hit by a car the summer after 8th grade, broke a leg, tons of stitches, in the hospital for a week. I put the broken leg on my 1st medical and the doc asked me about it and which leg and my response was - "uh... hmmmm... to be honest, it was so long ago, I'm not even sure which leg it...

How long it took you to fly with your loved ones?

Took my wife up the next day after my checkride. Took a couple of my kids up that weekend. I felt ready. You're only 1/2 way through your PPL. I didn't feel "ready" at that point either. Have you done any XC solos? Plan one of your XC solos to a Delta, talk to tower, land, grab a bite to...

What does a "normal" market look like?

Boy I forgot all about this thread and then it popped up in my inbox... as the OP. I figured out what a normal market is... it's not! LOL... there is no "normal"... there's just "a market". Sometimes it's up and sometimes it'd down. Anyway, we did find a Cherokee Six, stumbled upon it...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

Awesome write up! Over the summer I got my PPL and we closed on a Cherokee Six at the beginning of last month. The Bahamas quickly rose to the top for trips we need to make. So we got a beachfront cottage reserved in Spanish Wells next summer for a week and can't wait. Thanks for sharing all...

    Self doubt or bad pilot?

#1 - don't give up unless the flying part is what actually doesn't excite you any more. If you're just bumming because you don't feel prepared, aren't prepared, or your instructor needs to help you more... then just quit the pity party and get through it. #2 - if you don't feel you are ready...

    DPE Reviews website

I was going to, but the site doesn't seem to have a place for that, so I guess it comes from another source. Do you have a link for that source?

    Confessions of a Cherokee Pilot

I was getting checked out on a Cherokee 180 and we landed at a neighboring airport to fuel up (our fuel farm was out of service temporarily). Not sure what I got distracted by, but apparently I did because I left the left-side cap laying on top of the wing. We were having a hard time starting...
