How are the Florida peeps doing ?

Ok so far, the main brunt isn't to our side (East Cost/ MLB) yet. We will see the larger impacts tonight and tomorrow. Have some friends about 40 miles north of the eye wall and they're out of power and some downed limbs/trees, nothing too major. Where it made landfall is a TOTAL mess...

I just paid $700 for a tire change

Normally I would too. However, in this case, the plane was ~3hrs (drive) from home and this shop was the only one on the field. There are far greater battles to be fought, this wasn't one of them.

    The Big Trip

Awesome pics and sounds like an amazing trip - nicely done! Great looking plane too!!

Another post about how awesome it is to be instrument rated..

Great write-up @drummer4468! I got my IR this past March and seem to file about 80-90% of the time. Me filing has less to do with weather and more to do with enjoying flying within "the system" coupled with the complex airspace around Florida where most of our flying happens. In fact, so far...

what's in your flight bag, middle age edition

I'm guessing this was attributed to my surprise in the cost of the survival kit?! Hard to put a price on anyone's life, I agree with you 100% there. At the same time, for me personally, I make my best attempt at balancing cost vs reality vs diminishing returns. All three of those will be...

Early Solo and Low time PPL

I solo'd at ~70hrs  It wasn't for the lack of flying, usually 2-3 times per week. It wasn't for the lack of comprehension or learning the skills. It wasn't for the lack of understanding concepts/regs/requirements, I ended up with a 98% on the written. I had an instructor, middle...

Dayum!! That is one serious survival kit with a serious price tag too ~$3K+ depending on options

    Currency requirements

I was originally told that if the airport was reporting IFR or LIFR, it could be logged as an IA (assumng this is not simulated). The FAA InFO above clarifies in such a way that the airport does not have to be IFR/LIFR, the approach just needs to be IMC somewhere beyond/past the FAF altitude...

That was close: DCA Runway Incursion 9/20

Looks like the plane on the ground was taxiing to RWY 19 and crossed RWY 15 (airplane on short final to RWY 15 had to power up). ...have a phone number for you to call, advise when ready to copy

900+ hours and still learning basic stuff

Same... A couple weeks ago, I wanted to go from Peter O (TPF) to Melbourne. Storms came through the Tampa area, so we waited to depart. The storms pretty much hung out between Tampa and Melbourne and further to the North. Weather was clear to the South (through the Restricted areas and near...

    Diamond DA 62

I'd want to fly back with him too - very nice upgrade!! Sure would be nice if Dynon got their AP approved for the Six. The Aercruz has been great though. I had to make some adjustments in the settings to get it to not "search" as much for the altitude. Jesse has done a lot of Cherokees but...

Our PA32 does good for some XC flights... but at some point it's definitely not faster than commercial. More convenient in many ways still, but not faster. I'd say at about the 1000 nm mark commercial starts to become faster due to needing bio breaks. Is your Dad doing a full Dynon panel with...

I just paid $700 for a tire change

That could very well be. Oddly enough, I had him pull the part number from the existing pump and that was in part what I went from. But I'm sure he's probably had way too many instances where the owner got the wrong part and then it prolonged things that much more. In my defense, I kept him...

I just paid $700 for a tire change

I was AOG away from home early this year with a bad mechanical fuel pump on our PA32. The local shop on that field took it on. I ended up googling/searching/etc for the replacement pump and only found 1 available. Needless to say, I ordered it and had it dropped shipped. Originally I told...

    Weekend Instrument ground school, thoughts?

Similar here... Took my written prior to doing the 10-day PIC training course. I used a combination of Gleim and Sporty's and ended up with a 96% on the written. But I wasn't totally in tune to everything until I did the practical training. Much more made sense after/during that. Given I...

    Hershey bar wings and landing

I recall that in the PA28 as well. The 1956 172 not so much. I recall a number of times a bit of an updraft while on final and I had the power all the way out and it wouldn't descent a bit... The PA28 (or 32), that didn't seem to be an issue - haha.

How much weight do you give Convective SIGMETs?

^^^This^^^ When I see a Convective SIGMET, it is another data point. By itself, it doesn't do much for me, in general I may still fly (or not). It's not until I get the rest of the information as @dmspilot mentions that I can figure out my go/no-go. My recent example is flying across FL...
