Turning into the wind for runup

I have not turned "into the wind" in 30 years. I turn about 90 degrees to the active runway so that: 1. I won't blast anyone behind me. 2. I have a clear view of the taxiway behind me. 3. I have a clear view of any airplane on final on the active runway.

    Beech Sport 411

I own a 1981 Sundowner as a "second" aircraft. The only reason I still have it is that I can't bear to sell it. It is that great of an airplane. My 21 year old son got his PPL in it and I told my wife I would sell it after he got his license, but I can't bring myself to do it. Now I have...

    File departure procedure?

I fly into (and out) of two Class B's pretty regularly - Houston and DFW. I always file with a DP or SID just because it gets me a simpler clearance, and even sometimes "cleared as filed". Of course I don't ever remember actually flying a complete procedure - small piston airplanes usually...

Cirrus down with parachute East Texas

What is the failure rate of the Continental engines in Cirrus? It may be a faulty perception on my part, but it just seems like an inordinate number of engine failures with the SR22s, or maybe they are just more publicized?

Cirrus down with parachute East Texas

Happened yesterday. IFR conditions - ceilings at Gladewater 07F were at 800-1500' most of the day. It sounds like he floated down OK but then the wind caught the chute and drug the airplane for quite a distance until it impacted a fairly large tree in a stand of timber...

    What's Flying Like in Retirement?

I'm an engineer not an accountant. My CPA sorts it out, but no, you cannot expense the personal use of the aircraft. But believe me, a having it registered to your business helps alot.

    What's Flying Like in Retirement?

I am 56 years old, so not retired yet, but I am looking at it! I have thought about how flying would change for me and it comes down to one huge difference - COST! I own my own businesses and I have two airplanes - both modest but still have to be maintained. I am like alot of people - I run...

End of an era - Trade-A-Plane

I will miss it. A great bathroom read and I actually found some suppliers and products in the business sections, which I never would have been exposed to online.

FUEL pressure fluctuation / fuel flow change

Looks like it was a slightly clogged injector. I ended up taking all the injectors out and cleaning them per GAMI instructions. On the test flight, I had much improved consistent CHT's across all cylinders, with the exception of #5 which is at the back by the oil cooler. That cylinder runs...

FUEL pressure fluctuation / fuel flow change

For some reason cannot edit title. I was able to edit the text in the body of the post. I apologize for the confusion. No issues with OIL pressure!

FUEL pressure fluctuation / fuel flow change

This actually makes sense. My #2 cylinder CHT runs 20 degrees hotter (365 F) and EGT runs cooler, which indicates a clogged injector / lean cylinder to me. I will check that....

FUEL pressure fluctuation / fuel flow change

Sorry about the confusion - I mistyped. Should be FUEL pressure fluctuation. NOT oil pressure. I am trying to figure out how to edit the post title...

FUEL pressure fluctuation / fuel flow change

1995 Commander 114B with a Lycoming IO-540 with 2016 TTH since new on the engine.... In cruise I see fuel pressure at a steady 25 psi and fuel flow set at 10.8 gph (running LOP and have GAMIs). Sporadically the fuel pressure will momentarily drop down to near 15 psi and fuel flow increases to...

Does your spouse have a clue

My spouse would be dead if I became incapacitated. I have tried to get her to become interested in at least learning how to work the radios but to no avail. Most of the time she crawls into the back seat and sleeps. She might not even know if I became incapacitated. I am 56 years old now and...

    Rebuilt v overhauled engine

I am not going to jump in the debate between factory rebuilt vs overhauled - good information posted already. But...alot has to do with your specific situation. I have a first run Lycoming IO-540 at 2,016 since new hours - original to the airplane. Lycoming gave me a great deal for this...

    Ideal Flying Video?

From what I have seen so far, you have one of the best "flying" channels on Youtube. I really enjoy everything - including the flight planning. I am IFR rated but in a non-pressurized piston. I enjoy seeing how you flying a turbo-prop pressurized single makes a difference in you approach...

    SIDs and STARs

In my opinion, the cockpit is very comfortable once you are seated. Buy it is a #*&@ to get into the left (or right) seat. There is a spar you climb over and then just squeezing between the seats. I have only flown a few 1990's era Malibus. I have heard that the new models are easier to get...

    Struggling to Land the Plane

Alot of good advice. My only additional advice is to re-emphasize steady approach, hit your target speed over the numbers, and sight picture - look all the way down to the end of the runway once you get over the numbers. Two things should always come as a surprise - when you release an arrow...
