Filing a Flight Plan vs Flight Following

No need for me to bring up the differences between FF and a VFR flight plan - done already above. I have a 21 year old son flying airplane getting his IR from our local instructor. I REQUIRE him to get FF every time he does a cross country. For one thing, it is good training with radio work...

Airline/Professional Pilot Interview & driving record

I owned a company with 300+ employees for 30 years. We had company vehicles that needed to be used at times by a large percentage of the employee base. We definitely checked an applicant's driving record before hire. 30 years of experience told me that ignoring speed limits (laws) was an...

Cessna 150 crash near Tyler TX, 1 fatality

Tower near Ponta shows to be 1,586 AGL. Definitely a tall one.

Cessna 150 crash near Tyler TX, 1 fatality

Many years ago when I was 18 years old I was flying south of Texarkana TX scud running (which was easier on those days due to no cell towers) and all of a sudden I found myself flying between two gigantic towers. Scared the living you know what out of me. That was in 1982 and I have forgotten...

    DIY Dog Hearing Protection?

Back in the day when we flew without headsets, I don't think we ever knew that there was a problem with noise in the cockpit. I take mine off every now and then while flying and it is hard to believe that we used to fly without them. Just don't ever give your dog a headset and they'll never...

    New 2020 G6 Cirrus

I agree - I am a 57 year old 35+ year pilot and I recognize that Cirrus is the future. I have converted my 1995 Commander to a glass panel and do not ever want to go back to flying with steam gauges only again. Just like I enjoy the new technology in my home, car, entertainment, etc. Flying...

    New 2020 G6 Cirrus

I saw the video and it further reinforced why Cirrus has taken over the new SEL piston market. I have never flown in one and maybe never will, but I recognize a good business plan and product when I see one. The future is not 50-70 year old pilots - it is young, up and coming (future rich)...

    Beech Musketeer/Sundowner

I have owned a few airplanes over the years, but I have and will always keep my 1981 Sundowner. My 21 year old son got his PPL in it and is working on his IFR. I have another son who has expressed interest in doing the same. I don't often get as attached to anything as I have to this...

    150 knots for $150k

My 1995 Commander 114B will get 140-150 TAS easily at 65% HP BUT....I am running an Electroaire EIS and GAMI injectors. Fuel burn is 10.8 GPH. I can easily get 150 TAS but with a higher fuel burn (11.5 GPH with a little more MP and RPM). 114B's can be found in the low $100's, but you have to...

Traffic pattern conflict crosswind vs 45 entry

Or just be the pilot that doesn't like to bother with worrying about traffic pattern entry and just make every approach straight in "on final"! Have definitely seen a few of those jewels over the years!

Traffic pattern conflict crosswind vs 45 entry

I've managed to pass a few over the past 35 years. But thanks for the thought. My point was that there is still alot of confusion regarding pattern entry into non towered fields. This was not a point of emphasis many years ago. I am glad that it is now.

Traffic pattern conflict crosswind vs 45 entry

AIM is not "regulatory" but the pattern recommendations are what most pilots have been instructed with for many years. 45 degree entry should give way to traffic on downwind. I had to learn all of this late in life. I honestly don't remember being taught about non towered traffic pattern...

    150 knots for $150k

In reality, quite a few differences: 1. Cowl modification which does gain 5-7 kts in cruise. 2. Lycoming IO-540 in the 114B is a dual mag vs. the single drive dual mag in the 114. 3. Several ADs taken care of in the tail. 4. 20 year newer airframe on the 114B with more updated avionics (still...

    150 knots for $150k

I don't know the physical dimensions of the OP, but if he is like me (and alot of other middle age men), he is fat. I am 6'1" and 230 lbs. That makes a big difference for the answer to this "150 kt"question. For me, it meant a 1995 Commander 114B - you can be a lard a@#$ and not touch...

What Order: AP, Navigator, Engine Monitor

Unless I missed it, I don't see what kind of airplane you have. If one with a constant speed prop, I would vote for an engine monitor first. Once you fly with one, you will wonder how you ever did without one. GPS and then AP. If you get the AP ahead of the GPS navigator, you will have to...

    Air Wagner..... He’s baaaaackk.

Reading these posts is entertaining and predictable in regard to the ones that hammer this guy ("Jerry Wagner") about the mistakes he makes. Pretty much the same ones that belittle and criticize posts on here (and they usually have about 12,000 posts to their credit- the professional POA...

    Petit Jean State Park (Arkansas)

Fact about the state park and the airport - the Rockefellers donated the land for the state park several decades ago. The land was a private retreat for them. The landing strip is really nice (and long) for a "state park" airport landing strip. The reason why is because it was built for the...

    Mooney gone?

I would buy a fleet of airplanes so that I could have something different to fly every day.

    Mooney gone?

I have two sons 6'5" and 6'7" respectively. They love flying Mooneys. But they are also both not overweight. Their dad (me) is 6'2" and 240 lbs (fat). I don't like sitting in a Mooney.

    Looking up at airplanes

I look at pretty much ANY engine powered machinery going by - airplanes, boats, cars, and trains. I have several classic cars, two boats (bass boat and a aluminum fishing boat), and two airplanes. My carbon footprint is huge, and I am very content with that. I would love to have a train...
