How do you cover your last mile?

Uber has greatly improved the utility of GA flight in regard to an increased value in transportation. Uber has greatly cut down my need to rent a car on quite a few trips. I am a big fan - it sure makes life easier now that you can get that service in almost any town of decent size.

Best Starter Plane For Bigger Than Average Person?

I agree that it is doable. I am 230 lbs and when I fly in a Bonanza / Baron I compare it to flying economy class on an airline - it definitely can be done and is done all the time, but I hate rubbing shoulders or touching anyone when I fly or travel. NOW....I realize that my ideal weight...

Best Starter Plane For Bigger Than Average Person?

I think the 300 lb part would be the deal killer for a Bonanza - of any model. First of all you have to scoot across a co-pilot seat to get into the left seat, and secondly the width across the cabin in a Bonanza would not be good for a 300 lb pilot if he had anyone sitting next to him. I love...

    I bought a Cherokee 6 for under $30K

Great video. I think that anyone who clicked on it thinking that you bought a great ready to fly Cherokee 6 for under $30K does not know much about the airplane market. I liked the title and pretty much knew how you got one at that price before I viewed the video. Don't worry about telling us...

Best Starter Plane For Bigger Than Average Person?

I have sons 6'6" and 6'4". They are skinny boys. I own a Beech Sundowner and a Commander 114B. 6'4" son has no problem in either plane. He flies the Sundowner several time a week training for his IFR rating. 6'6" son can fit in both, but headroom is not quite adequate. He fits much better...

New cylinder - 75% power. Lean for fuel flow or CHT

I just put a Lycoming factory re-built IO-540. Follow the procedure that the cylinder manufacture gives you for both initial ground run and subsequent break in flight to the letter and you will not go wrong. That means use your POH for the 75% power setting at 5,000' altitude. Trust the POH...

High Wing Or Low Wing poll

57 years old, low wings for years, but I can see a high wing in my future.... Huge problem getting my 80 year old dad and 84 year old father in law in and out - and getting worse!

    Asking for Pop-up IFR Clearance

This. If you start out with FF then it is usually no big deal when you ask for clearance to get below a layer to get to your destination airport. At least that is my experience. I just tell them in plain English, "XXX Approach can I get a clearance to get below this deck to my destination"...

    mid-air collision... avoided

Hey you did good. I can remember having "near misses" several times back in the 80's when I was 19 years old and flying (and sometimes scud running) cross countries with zero ATC help and of course no ADSB - In. And a 19 year old brain, which was probably the worst part. I can remember having...

    Beech Sierra Experience?

Sounds like you are having a blast with your new airplane! I think the Sierra is a great air frame and as far as I am concerned the Lycoming IO-360 is the best 4 cylinder aircraft engine ever made. It is just a great power plant. I hope you have many hours of great flying in your new airplane!

    Beech Sierra Experience?

Wow - nice looking airplane. Send pictures of the panel and interior. You will love the room and the pilot's side door (where it should be in all airplanes). So you are 10-15 kts slower than other 200hp airplanes - who cares? You are more comfortable and not rubbing shoulders with anyone...

Does anyone use Victor Airways anymore?

In low ceiling conditions (IMC or not) I always file IFR and use airways whenever possible. They tend to fly over more possible airports and it is easier to have all backup VORs dialed up and just stay on the same course in case I have issues with my primary NAV source (GTN 750). The ironic...

    Beech Sierra Experience?

These are great airplanes. Built like a tank (hence the speed issue) and easy to fly. Don't let anyone scare you on the "donuts" - if these airplanes are flown sloppily on final approach AND a go around is not done if on a unstable approach, they can porpoise a little bit and maybe cause a...

Do you use flight following when flying VFR?

One thing some pilots don't realize is that you do NOT have to be going somewhere to get FF. If you are just going to make a run to the lake for a sightseeing trip or just want to go eat breakfast somewhere but don't want to be burdened with having to fly a "route", you can STILL ask ATC for FF...

Upgrade to new primary engine monitor but keeping old gauges - CHT probe question

Fair point and I might end up doing that. The engineer in me likes redundancy, even if it is only "relative" in nature. The thing is, compared to most airplanes I have owned or flown, the Commander "six pack" factory engine gauges are actually very functional in their location and easy to...

Upgrade to new primary engine monitor but keeping old gauges - CHT probe question

The only problem with that is that the #5 cylinder would read a little differently on the CGR compared to the other cylinders on the CGR, which of course would get their readings from the same style of probe. I would rather the "different" probe be assigned to the old analog CHT gauge.

Upgrade to new primary engine monitor but keeping old gauges - CHT probe question

I am getting towards the end of a major project of installing a new factory rebuild Lycoming IO-540 and at the same time installing a new Electronics International CGR-30P engine monitor that is certified as the "primary" monitor BUT I am keeping my old analog gauge cluster as a redundant means...

    Plane & Pilot magazine

I like P&P. I for one still like print magazines. P&P is good for 4-5 bathroom sessions. The articles are of varying lengths that are suitable for a variety of circumstances.

Filing a Flight Plan vs Flight Following

Wow...OK. ADSB takes the place of ATC. OK.

Current Synthetic Vision - Just how useful is it up close?

I purchased and installed an Aspen ProMax unit in my airplane about a year ago (along with a GTN 750). I paid the extra money for the synthetic vision. As an old 56 year old pilot who has had nothing but round gauges, I was excited about getting a little piece of a glass cockpit. I turned the...
