    Engine failure at night

Flying at night: Fly as high as practical (oxygen). Carry oxygen with you and use it at a lower altitude than you normally would at night. 10,000 MSL or higher would be good. I fly as high as practical in daytime as well for the same reason - get as much glide distance as possible. Don't fly...

    Cigarette lighter and ash trays

I am 58 and remember as a kid the cloud in the back of airliners. Probably the last 10-12 rows. And the non-smoking section started with a row right in front of the last smoking row - no way in the world to keep the smoke back in the non-smoking section! I remember the uproar when they cut...

Let me get ahead of myself: Buy into a twin? Story time.

You sound like a very rational, fiscally conservative individual. I sincerely appreciate and applaud that. But.... because of that trait, I don't think GA flying is the right thing for you. Nothing about it makes financial sense. In many respects I admire you. I wish I was more financially...

Perks of my commercial pilot job

I just flew there for the first time last Saturday with some of my EAA chapter members. Definitely worth the flight and gas to see this collection of planes. From there we flew to Tyler Pounds KTYR and had lunch in the cafe in the old terminal building. Food was great and there is another...

    Ribbon cutting with prop.

Ken, it is a little bit of a different idea, but I seriously doubt that any harm could come from doing it. Be sure and post it on YouTube - no matter what the outcome is! That is one heck of a 737 hanger you built. Very envious of it myself.

Tall pilot roll call (6'5"+), advice for a beginner

I am only 6'1", but I have two sons (one of which is a Commercial pilot) who are 6'5" and 6'7". Trainers - high wing Cessna 172 / low wing Beech Sundowner. Complex - high wing Cessna 182 or 206 / low wing Commander 114 or 114B. For your size, a pilot's side entry door as well as good head...

    Boost Oxygen

I keep a bottle in the plane and use it when below 10,000' and use my regular oxygen system higher than 10,000 I think the bottle works just as intended - if I get to 89 or lower on my pulse oximeter a quick "blast" from the bottle gets me right back up to 97. You have to use it as instructed...

Should I be doing I.F.R. to the right?

This is a great topic since not many are left that fly this way anymore. I can remember when this technique was very common among VFR pilots or anyone flying in VMC. I got my PPL in 1981 and remember doing it quite often. I also remember taking a few wrong turns....

    Instrument Check Ride Write Up

Good write up and congratulations. I decided to get my Commercial at 58 years old because my 22 year old son was getting his. We both had our check ride (and passed) on the same day. I am really glad I did it - it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I found out that I did not practice...

Should I get a Beechcraft Musketeer?

I have owned mine for four years and definitely have not experienced that. My boys have flown the crap out of mine and gotten PPL, Instrument, and Commercial certificates with it. I do know that you don't want to go to Textron for parts unless absolutely necessary. They are very expensive...

Should I get a Beechcraft Musketeer?

I have a Beech Sundowner (newer version of the "Musketeer") that I let my sons use for training. They are 6'5" and 6'7" respectively. These planes are huge, which is why my family likes them. Pilot's side door is also a huge plus. They are 10-15 knots slower than most any other 180hp fixed...

    KHOU or other Houston airports

If your friend is going to Texas Medical Center then KHOU definitely the most convenient to fly into. Don't let anyone talk you out of flying in there - yes it is a large Class B airport but it is VERY GA "friendly". It is by far the most convenient to downtown Houston. You can get Uber...

    airplane as an investment..different take

I hate money: Travel - two SEL airplanes / large hanger - I could not think of a more expensive way to travel if I tried. Meat - Bow hunt - the most expensive way to put food on the table you could ever think of. Bass Fishing - $70K boat and I throw the Bass back - don't even eat them. How do...

    Air-to-Air Piper PA-11 Cub Special

This post / pictures will single handedly increase the market price for these airplanes. I want a PA-11 in the worst way now.

    Air-to-Air Cessna 337 Skymaster

Very cool airplane and great photos. Cessna 337 is a good business school study of the classic "answering a question no one was asking". But still a very cool design and idea.

Tall pilot looking to buy a time building plane

Exactly. As I posted earlier, I have two giant sons. They easily fit in a Mooney and could fly one very comfortably - alone. Leg room is almost unlimited - that seat goes back a long way. Shoulder room - not so much.

Tall pilot looking to buy a time building plane

I have two tall sons - 6'7" and 6'5". I have a Beech Sundowner for them to train in and a Commander 114B to travel. Both of these low wing airplanes offer good headroom for tall pilots and no "shoulder touching" for the two occupants in the front seats. I would never want to own a plane where...

    Non alcoholic beer.....

My 81 year old dad drinks non-alcoholic beer WHILE he drives only - in other words when he is "drinking and driving". Regular beer just before and just after he exits the car. I guess this is one legitimate use of this type of product. I have my hands full.

Figuring out if being a pilot is good career for me.

Sustra - this is just a wild guess, but from what little I know about you, I would go a different career direction.

    Androids or iSheep?

I have never owned an Apple product in my life. Garmin Pilot on Samsung tablet ( and phone). I hear ForeFlight is great, but so far have always gotten to where I wanted to go since 1981 without it.
