Spin Recovery Training... and my first (not-so) aerobatic lesson

No doubt! In fighters you almost never pushover to negative G, you roll and pull to keep the G's positive most of the time. On the rare occasion that you experience negative G for any length of time, its amazing how much crap will accumulate in the canopy- something I noticed was missing from...

Okay Ford Truck fans: Name this noise

I've owned a hotrod shop, building 1000hp Fords and modifying Lamborghinis, Lotus, Porsche and Audi R8's for the last 15 years. I would bet that is a torque converter on its way out, based on the audio. A few of my cars...I'm a Ford man all the way, other than my weird love for exotics. (I...

    Shortest strip you've flown from

A runaway prop is where the blades go into low pitch due to a failure of a component (like the governor)- RPM's go out of limits, and the only solution is to pull power back to keep it from shedding blades- which means you will be developing little or no thrust on that side. In some cases the...

Sport Aerobatics Magazine Article and Flying the Pitts S-2C

Great write up! I owned and taught in an S2 Pitts for many years, one of the things I worked hard at was teaching people that the planes are not the monsters to land that they have the reputation for being. Like any taildragger, you fly it to the tie-downs, and it does have narrow gear and a...

A bit of a dream / itchy that feels out of reach

I realize this is an older thread, but if you are still around...I live in Texas, where aerobatics are very popular. I've been teaching acro for nearly 40 years, beginning in an old Citabria back in the late 70's, followed by my 36 mos as an IP (faip) in the AF. I flew the F-15C, and after...

    Shortest strip you've flown from

The only time I have ever had a runaway prop was right after liftoff at Eek, in a 406, coming out of there really overweight (typical bush day). What a perfect place for such a thing to happen. That was 25 years ago and I think my knees are still shaking.

Spin Recovery Training... and my first (not-so) aerobatic lesson

I've been teaching aerobatics for almost 40 years now, including my time as an IP in the Air Force. I flew the T-37 and T-38 as a cadet and as an IP, the F-15C operationally, and I have owned a couple of Super Decathlons (one of my favorite planes!) a Pitts S2B, an Extra and a Laser, besides the...

    Shortest strip you've flown from

I spent 8 years as a bush pilot in Alaska, after retiring from the Air Force. Loved it- met and married my wife there! I flew everything from 'vans to 406's to Twotters to 1900's on the larger side, to Super Cubs and Beavers, C206/C207, Maules...probably more I've forgotten. Lots of really short...
