    MOA NOR*

    Thanks. So obvious! :)

    MOA NOR*

Question about MOAs. See the image below, the floor of the Brady NOR* drops to about 2,000 AGL while the other MOAs are about 4-5,000 AGL. While I know that I can fly through an MOA, ATC really doesn't like it this part of the country and I prefer to avoid MOAs. What is a "NOR*" ? Or is it just...

    Airplane values

You can join AOPA on a monthly subscription basis and access VREF for a valuation. Then cancel your membership. Bluebook seems to be difficult to find. I tried because that's what the local taxing authority uses. In the end, both Bluebook and VREF were within 5% on a valuation of a C172.

Saying the word "bomb" on a flight

I saw this news article today: "Man Apologizes to Passengers as He’s Cuffed By Police After Plane Diverts Because Someone Said ‘Bomb’ During an Argument" I recall when one of my programmers and I flew to Dallas in about 2003 to meet with a manufacturing client. My coder was explaining the...

Recommendation for flying school around Austin TX??

If you don't get a strong recommendation I'd suggest visiting each local school and having a conversation with the CFI who would be teaching you. For me, the style and personality of the CFI was about 2/3 of the decision process. There were other CFI's at my flight school that would not been as...

    False ForeFlight Traffic Alerts

I have ADSB-In traffic on four devices: iPhone (FF) two Avidyne 440s and the big Entegra MFD. You'd think, since they all receive the same data in, that they would all show the same traffic but they don't. One will sometimes show a phantom aircraft that's very close and same altitude. I've...

Tips for flying through the Annular Eclipse

After scrapping our flight plan, the weather forecast changed on Wednesday from clear to include possible clouds. About an hour before the eclipse we were overcast and I was not happy. But it cleared from the west and the sun was fully visible about 10 minutes before peak. We had a great view as...

    USPS lost my registration card

So I requested and paid for a replacement on Monday. The card arrived Thursday. "Wow" I thought, The FAA is really responsive. Today another registration card arrived. So the original took almost a month to be delivered with the replacement processed and delivered in only 5 days. I had no idea...

Tips for flying through the Annular Eclipse

Thanks for all the advice. I've decided to stay on the ground and view it through my NASA certified eyewear. For us in San Antonio, it's clear blue skies and it peaks at noon. Thanks again!

Tips for flying through the Annular Eclipse

I’m planning to take the family up this Saturday and fly through the path of the eclipse. We’ve purchased protective eyewear and I’ll clean the windows! Unfortunately, I don’t own a convertible Cherokee which leads to my question. How to give my pax the best viewing experience? I’m thinking of...

    USPS lost my registration card

No sign of it after 10 days so I'm sure it's lost. Most of my neighbors are great about bringing misdelivered mail over, but those who aren't are the types to throw it away and say they haven't seen it. :) Informed Delivery says to wait 7 days before reporting it lost, but clicking on the lost...

    USPS lost my registration card

I subscribe to the USPS service called Informed Delivery. They send me an email early each day showing scanned images of the front of whatever will be delivered that day. The registration card was shown, but never arrived. USPS says to wait 7 days before reporting lost mail. I've waited, but my...

    The Aircraft Bluebook

Update: I own a C172N leased to a flight school. Because it is used to generate income, it is taxed annually as commercial property. It has been used as a trainer for more than 15 years and has 22,000+ airframe hours. The current engine has 910 hours with a TBO of 2,000. The local appraisal...

    The Aircraft Bluebook

Of course not. That would be tax evasion which is a felony. I'm simply saying that a Bill of Sale does not have to show the actual amount paid. In my specific situation, this is not taxation of an aircraft sale, it's the annual property tax. The taxing authority cares not how much you paid for...

    The Aircraft Bluebook

I believe that Aircraft Bluebook (a division of Informa) is a different company from Aircraft-KBB. A bill of sale doesn't work in this case as they would anticipate a low-ball sale to affect taxation. I purchased my last airplane for $1 plus other valuable considerations. The protest filing...

    The Aircraft Bluebook

A few years ago, the local property tax assessor declared the value of my C172 as if it were almost new. At the time, that was a value about 4x its actual value. I filed a protest (requesting a hearing and all their evidence) and a few days later I received a phone call from them. She quickly...

    Oh Piper

I've just completed a review of all my PA-32 aircraft maintenance logs. Some A&Ps specify exactly which ADs are completed while some just write "all current ADs complied with". Only one maintenance shop noted that "all current SBs are complied with". Piper has now posted SB 1375C to their...

    Oh Piper

Landing gear attachment bolts. SB 1375C does not seem to be posted to the official Piper on-line tech docs system yet. From what I understand, this applies to most fixed gear Pipers with at least 2,000 hours or 7 years service and had installed oversized bolts as per SB 1375A.

1969 Cherokee 140b shoulder harness install

Installing BAS harnesses in the front seats was the the first thing I did after buying each of my airplanes. I spent about $2,200 for each harness and another $500 or so for the installation. The Cessna 172N had only lap belts and I liked having the shoulder straps on an inertia reel for comfort...
