Looking to split flight time (time build) with someone in the DC area

I am looking for something similar in SE Michigan. I will be in the DC area (Herndon) over Thanksgiving and Christmas if you want to go up a few times. I will be flying my SR22 into JYO, but for time building it costs a lot more than $55/each.

If you HAVE to shoot an approach, would you choose an ILS or an LPV?

LPV - its much more stable all the way to the ground. It will fly you right into the 1000' markers if you let it.

In the very early process of picking a plane....

Get your instrument rating in it and the insurance cost comes way down. I went straight from my PPL into my instrument. Sounds like that lease with your friend might be a sweet way to go and it would help you ease into the ownership process and offset some cost.

In the very early process of picking a plane....

I have sort of a similar situation, except 2 smaller kids and a smaller dog, so our total payload is about the same. I did my training in a 172. After my PPL I transistioned to a DA40. During my instrument I bought a share of a Cirrus SR22. When I looked at the old worn out options (Mooney...

The IFR checkride and swapping planes at the last second...

Hello, its 2015! I would get a new CFI! You will almost certianly do a GPS approach on the checkride...and once you get your ticket most of your approaches in the real world will be GPS. Since getting my ticket (a couple months ago) all i have flown in the real world are ILS and RNAV. I...

    Finally doing it

KVNC is a nice airport. Seems to be a fairly busy place - we usually make the trip down from Michgian a few times a year to Venice. The restaurant over at Suncoast is pretty good also! You will love the A20's....we have Bose X in the Cirrus and they work great but I was really impressed with...

    YouTube training videos!

I also like Mr Aviation and Flight Chops. Always watch them as soon as they publish a new one. Another good video is Martin Pauly. I wish he would do more of them, he has done some really nice ones with his Bonanza going into larger airports.

    DME arcs in San Diego

I did 1 during training, but not on my checkride. On the ride I did an ILS, VOR and a RNAV.

    Apple Orchard near Airport?

Does anyone know of an apple orchard near any airport? We usually spend an afternoon in October at a local orchard, but thought it would be fun to fly to a new one. Ideally within 200 nm of SE Michigan.

Your engine quit, pick a airframe

Cirrus all the way. Add a bit to the scenario - what if you were in IMC with the celing at 500 AGL over the smokey mountains? That is the kind of situation I like knowing that chute is ready if I need it.

    Student Equipment

Get a Bose X or Lightspeed Zulu used - you can find them for $300-$350 easily. Its only about 2 hours worth of flight time - well worth it for a nice headset. This is not a place to go cheap.

    Checkride in Actual

I PASSED! Look out clouds, here I come! I made 1 big mistake, but the rest of the ride was really good so he let it slide and passed me! Whew! Took the test in an SR22.

why full stop at take off and land once Solo?

I did 7 touch n go's on my solo. 6000' runway and a 172 gives plenty of time to slow down and make sure everything is good to go before adding power.

    Checkride in Actual

This morning the forecast after 10 AM looked sketchy, with celings at 2500 AGL - which would have been marginal, but ok. So we went ahead with the oral. Passed the oral ok, but by then PTK & FNT had dropped to 800 - 1500 AGL broken, so didn't get to fly (DPE said we could do it in IMC, but...

    Checkride in Actual

My Instrument Ride is scheduled for Saturday out of PTK. Looks like a chance of rain. Has anyone done their checkride in actual? Anything to watch out for that may be different on the ride in actual vs simulated? I have 3.5 hours actual.

    Recommend me a first headset

Get a good ANR headset. Having the peace and quiet is well worth it. You can pick up Bose X or Lightspeed Zulu used in the $350 range easily. I like the Bose, my 9 and 11 year olds both prefer Lightspeed. Try on a pair at your flight school and see what fits your head the best.

Will be PPL training in a 150. Kneeboard?

I am too tall for a kneeboard in a 152/172. Never ever needed one during my PPL anyway. Just not that much stuff to write down. When I started my instrument I transitioned to a SR22 and love having the room for the kneeboard.
