    Budgeting cost of Instrument rating

Very good point. I see students vary by a huge amount at the time required for sign off. On the low end I have had several just waiting for 40 hrs to go by and took the ride right at 40 hrs. On the high end, I have had few over 100 hrs. Some people learn at different speeds and it also...

King Air down Boyne City, MI

The approach to N98 Boyne City is not difficult but you had better nail those altitudes on the step downs and not get low!! BIG hill that you get pretty close to on approach there! If you mix up a fix and descend early, you WILL hit the trees. KIYRE above 1540 is no joke. Its an LP only -...

    Advice

Full scale GS deflection - I would say both. As a CFII you should be so far from letting that happen - its not a simple mistake. Its something that can (will) kill you.

    Career Change to Aviation (CFI)

If you enjoy teaching, its a great way to fly. No need to enroll in a big school. You are already getting close to commercial mins. Get that done, work on the CFI, which is mostly self study anyway. Part time CFI is also an option if you want to keep your day job. I prefer to independent...

    Advice

Without knowing the question / answer for the oral its hard to judge. But 3 busts on instrument rides makes me wonder how instrument proficient are you? A full scale GS deflection? And you didn't notice ahead of time and go missed? Yikes. Practice. Then more practice - including different...

    Removing goggles on IR checkride

I have had several students with this problem. Get RID OF THE FOGGLES. Use a hood - such as the "hoodie" that clips on a hat. Foggles force you field of vision to be so small that you have to move your head side to side to see everything. That gives you the leans and vertigo.

Cessena TTx from FXE (Fort Lauderdale) to KTEB (New Jersey)

In the SR22 we go MLB - JYO pretty often non-stop. But as other have said, there are days where you have to be flexible and adjust departure times. Biggest thing that seems to change our plans are when those huge cold fronts slide south and a squall line sets up across northern Florida...

Plane crashes near home in Greenville, SC

If he was 10 miles away at 4500' MSL and it kept running for 7 miles he probably could have made it if he had kept his altitude. If its still running, stay up high so if the fan quits at 3 miles from the airport you have a chance - or at least more options. At least he walked away, thats the...

Age When You Passed Inst. Check Ride

I was 36. I started flying at 35, later in life than I should have. Time and money never aligned. My son just passed his instrument at age 17 in our SR22. I am his CFII, so that was pretty awesome. He is planning his commercial on his 18th birthday next year and the CFI shortly after.

Cirrus SF50 crashes on takeoff from KLAN 8/24

Downwind takeoff with a gust front coming behind you. And a 20 kt loss windshear report. Oh well, launch anyway! Yikes. Now there is a great example of ADM.

    Flying in South Korea

I am in South Korea for the next 2 weeks. Does anyone know of a flight school in South Korea that rents / provides dual instruction? I am a CFII and would love the chance to fly while I am here. Seems it would be a really cool experience. Not much on google for GA here. Thanks! Seth

Discovery Flight: My first piston single ride!

Fairly normal for a first flight, don't let it scare you away. Try your next flight at the first time slot available after sunrise. Air in the morning is cooler and smoother. Also like your instructor said - look out the windows and fly the plane. Looking further away to the horizon helps...

    I thought I wanted a Mooney...

Go sit in a bunch of other planes. Save a tad more $ and look for a G2 SR22. WAAAY more comfortable and fun to fly.

    Night vs IFR

I love flying at night. Night over water or mountains hasn't ever bothered me. I also don't mind IMC and my minimums are the published mins. About 1600 TT, 16% night and about 14% actual IMC. But, there is nothing wrong with being conservative. Just don't let your higher personal mins...

    Garmin 430 "Steep Turn Ahead"

As others have said, if you load the approach starting at WALON then you will be on a NoPT segement to ILOPY. If you hit the FPL button and scroll down to ILOPY and hit Direct Enter Enter it will take you direct to ILOPY and you will NOT get a procedure turn. The garmin has to make more than a...

Does Center ever provide vectors to final?

Yes, northern MI is mostly controlled by Minneapolis Center. They will vector and clear you for the approach (ACB, PLN, etc).

    Rusty pilot relearning weather question

Not true. TAF's do not give tops, layers, temps aloft, lapse rate, indications of convection, icing, etc. Skew T is the most valuable tool you can use and most people don't understand them or use them to their full potential.
