Best VFR route from Kansas City to Sacramento

Another vote here for the I-80 route. I've flown it in a light single (DA40) several times and it works quite well, especially in spring/summer/fall. Wayne

gtn 650xi auto bugging altitude on a gi 275

@7ZSTTto2 , normally the HDG and ALT bugs are managed by the autopilot, e.g. a GFC500. @asicer does a very nice job above explaining how the VNAV function works. Here's a 3-part video series on Modern Avionics and the Instrument Pilot that may also be of help. Wayne

ForeFlight Quick Tip: Where’s the Airport ?!

I’ve indeed also been using it for many years; just thought of making a video. Thx for watching. Wayne

ForeFlight Quick Tip: Where’s the Airport ?!

I often do this also and it does help with general SA. It's of course only precise if the active waypoint (e.g. KCDR) is aligned with the runway centerline (e.g. KCDR rwy 21/03), but would be off a bit if not runway aligned (e.g. KCDR rwy 30/12). Of course, the best strategy might well be to...

ForeFlight Quick Tip: Where’s the Airport ?!

Totally agree. At 02:16 in the video is the note: "Of course, eyes mostly outside looking for traffic, obstacles, and terrain".

ForeFlight Quick Tip: Where’s the Airport ?!

Have you ever had difficulty spotting an airport? Many years ago on my first significant cross country and approaching Chadron, Nebraska — for the life of me I couldn’t find the airfield. Of course, appropriately humbled, I eventually did. In this quick tip we’ll explore a very simple yet...

This website gives historical wind patterns for reporting facilities/airports, and might give you a macro idea of primary wind directions and magnitudes, by month.

    Cruise Corden airport

Maybe Inyokern (KIYK)?? The scenery during the flights sure looked like the Mojave or China Lake. BTW -- here's the very enjoyable video.

How does someone like this pass an IPC or a BFR?

Oh, departing San Carlos is "fun" :). After many trips there, on this video I'm still trying to get it right (previously reading back Oceanside instead of Woodside more than once)...

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

@Turbo-Arrow-Driver ... the magenta chevron (<) on the VDI is for VNAV operations whereas the magenta diamond (◆) is for the Glidepath. -- VNAV is used for (instrument arrivals and) instrument approach segments outside the segment leading to the FAF, in this case MUTOE (or JACUP) to IREME. --...

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

@luvflyin ... I think the "continuous descent" term is being used by the FAA to differentiate that strategy from the traditional "dive and drive" (i.e. descend, hold altitude, descend, hold altitude, etc). We could have different descent angles for each segment of a multi-stepdown approach, yet...

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

I agree that the angle change is small. Just a clarification on terminology (and Gryder made this error also)... the FAA does not term this "constant angle of descent" but rather "Continuous Descent Final Approach" (FAA AC 120-108). One could argue that continuous descent does not necessarily...

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

That's a good question. X-Plane uses the navigation database from Navigraph, which supplies monthly database updates to simulators of all sorts. "Our Navdata product is sourced from Jeppesen, a professional navdata provider for major airlines worldwide.", Navigraph My uncalibrated...

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

I'll have to think about how to do that in X-Plane. No doubt the magenta diamond would be below the aircraft, by how many "dots" high we would be I'm not sure. I'll see if I can duplicate. Wayne

Video and Discussion - Burley, ID accident. Was "Gryder"

As @Turbo-Arrow-Driver requested, here's a no-spiff video of the G1000 and GFC700 autopilot flying the RNAV 20 at KBYI on the sim (X-Plane 11). Although I've not flown the approach IRL, my real-life experience (>2000 hours) in a DA40 with G1000/GFC700 would agree quite well with this simulator...

    Popup or Call FSS?

I've used the following approach a handful of times, and as high as 12,500' MSL: takeoff VFR without a filed flight plan (with Flight Following always a good idea) prepare an IFR "Flight" in ForeFlight on your phone a handful of minutes before you feel you'll need an IFR clearance, tap "File"...
