    EAA and Siemens?

NX as a product came about via a late-1990s merger/updating of two high-end CAD/CAM/CAE products... Unigraphics (originally a McDonnell Douglas product) and I-DEAS (Structural Dynamics Research Corp), initially under the ownership of EDS and then Siemens. The primary high-end competitor of...

Agreed, as a supplement to eyeballs, tech could and should help. Pretty sure my little DA40/G1000 would have been screaming at me... and ForeFlight might have also caught the possible conflict.

Yep, I basically do this IRL at most all airports (if I'm not shooting an instrument approach), however not in the "panel" (unless done in advance, adding user waypoints in the panel GPS is not at all quick or convenient). In ForeFlight I load the appropriate Traffic Pattern procedure and then...

Yes, I agree on both @luvflyin points... OBS probably didn't play a role in the KVGT incident... and OBS off an aligned final approach waypoint is a good idea. The point I'd like to emphasize to all of us is: using OBS off an airport id (in this case KVGT) is in general a very BAD idea --and--...

With new navigators (e.g. GTN750) there are, as @luvflyin suggests, visual approaches to specific runways (e.g. 30L). However that's not the case with pre-2015 navigators (e.g. GNS530, early G1000) in which case many pilots suggest using OBS off the airport (in this case KVGT, OBS at 300). But...

    ForeFlight Quick Tips: Terrain Ahead!

The authority on this would of course be foreflight.com/pricing, however my understanding is that: Glide Advisor is in all ForeFlight subscriptions Hazard Advisor is in Pro Plus and Performance Plus subscriptions Profile is in Pro Plus and Performance Plus subscriptions Synthetic Vision is in...

Help on GPS - Latitude and Longitude

First I'd suggest updating to X-Plane 11.55, the current released version. Here's a Primer on X-Plane that might help... it includes info on Autopilot operation. Wayne

How to lean when landing at high altitude airport?

I did my first 100+ hours in a C162, all of that in the northern Sierra flying out of airports with density altitudes 6000' to 9000'. With a power/weight ratio better than a 180hp C172, I also had the C162 up to 13,500 over Tioga Pass. As many noted above, before or upon entering the pattern...

    GoPro Shutting Down

Mark, in addition to all the good tips (and accurate critique) above... I found with the Hero 8 (and 256gb SD card) if I had BOTH an internal battery and a connected external battery (i.e. a charging brick) that I had all sorts of early shutoff issues. However if I remove the internal battery...

IFR out of Half Moon Bay (Part 2)

Good stuff... thx! I'd be curious what the logic is for exception... seems that navigating (at last since 1990) via RNAV is much more precise than navigating by VOR or LOC... and therefore being turned in closer to the FAF would make MORE sense for RNAV. Hmmm.

IFR out of Half Moon Bay (Part 2)

Good point... my request for GPS 25 (habitual) should have indeed been a request for VOR 25, even though as we intended, Brian of course flew green needles. Thanks for the clarification that it might make a difference to ATC; I'd never thought that through. Wayne

IFR out of Half Moon Bay (Part 2)

Part 1 of this two-part series had copilot Brian flying the approach to minimums at Half Moon Bay (KHAF). After a great lunch, we now get to depart through Low IFR… and reinforce an important lesson. Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

IFR to Half Moon Bay (Part 1)

Today Brian -- fresh off his Instrument Checkride -- shoots an approach to minimums. If you fly on the US west coast and are looking for Low IFR, Half Moon Bay (KHAF) is a pretty good bet. Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot
