Chicago to Alaska via Piper Arrow

Michael, there might be a few useful tidbits garnered by skimming this 9-part series 2021 Alaska tour: (we were in a similar-speed aircraft, 285hp C182) Happy to help with any questions, Wayne BTW, on an earlier (i.e. 2017) attempt of Seattle area -to- Ketchikan, we planned a fuel stop on Port...

Advice for flying to Los Angeles

Absolutely do Catalina!! Might be easiest on your departure from the LA area before heading back northeast. My suggested flight itinerary: fly from the northeast into KSMO (IFR, or VFR under the Bravo shelves), do all your local stuff (per @mr_happyland suggestions) depart KSMO via the LA SFRA...

FlyingDocs to Bahía Tortugas - Part 2: Clinic & Return Stateside

We review our very successful clinic, and then take to the skies for the return stateside. Will we find fuel in San Felipe? Do the forecast thunderstorms materialize? Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

FlyingDocs to Bahía Tortugas (Part 1)

Today we’re off with 3 other aircraft for a Flying Doctors clinic in the Baja! For the outbound legs we’ll have a bit of headwind and localized buildups, clouds on the coast, and perhaps a lingering marine layer at our destination. Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Using microsoft flight simulator on Mac

Instead, just run X-Plane 12 in native mode on Mac OS. For replicating real-world physics and most panel avionics, X-Plane is generally considered an improvement over MSFS. These Primers might help getting jumpstarted: bit.ly/wam-x-plane-primer bit.ly/wam-ifr-x-plane-primer

Need help planning a VFR trip to the Aleutians

David, as you suggest, here's an example of just that... 3+ hours, 470nm, at <1000' MSL, just off the coast... Yakutat, south around the Kenai Peninsula, to Homer. With freezing levels well below MEAs (in August!), the only real choice. A bit weird for a pair of Alaska-novice pilots, but it...

IFR Currency for Raymond (Full ATC)

Indeed, the CA Central Coast has many, many micro climates that make things interesting. As you note, a Direct CALLI would have obligated the outbound PT with a fun obtuse angle :). From the south, we usually get Direct CALLI and the then-logical PT. Thanks for watching! Wayne

IFR Currency for Raymond (Full ATC)

If you've seen my good friend Raymond on the channel before, you'll know why I envy his piloting skills. Today we observe Raymond flying the approaches and a hold he needs in order to avoid an impending IPC. Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

    Learning new avionics

You might find this 3-part series "Modern Avionics and the Instrument Pilot" useful: ... it was largely filmed with a G3X/GTN/GFC500 aircraft... a great combo. Happy to help with any questions and transition concerns, Wayne

What are the advantages of X-plane 12?

@bluesideup , I'm getting 18-to-24 fps on, for my needs, reasonable graphics settings. Thanks for the info, Wayne

What are the advantages of X-plane 12?

Here's the iMac I'm running (the extra memory is important):

What are the advantages of X-plane 12?

I'm using XP12 primarily for IFR work and on an iMac (largely with the stock C172/G1000 and SR22) and have none of the issues mentioned by @bluesideup.

What are the advantages of X-plane 12?

Improvements from X-Plane 11 to X-Plane 12: much, much better Weather (clouds, precip, icing, runway surface conditions, etc) seasons (e.g. green trees in spring, golden trees in autumn, snow in winter) better visualizations (in the direction of MSFS2020) -- IMHO more important to gamers and...

Baja - Mexico charts and insurance

I agree with the comments above about the value of membership in Baja Bush Pilots. Regarding insurance: if your US-issued policy clearly states coverage for Mexico and at or above US$300,000... that's sufficient (ref: letter from Mexican authorities) you can get a short-term Mexico-issued...

There are MANY advantages to the Aeronautical Map in ForeFlight:

Central America EFB, Wx, and Charts?

ForeFlight "aeronautical map" will provide decent coverage of airports, airspace, airways, and waypoints for Mexico and Central America. Pseudo-sectional (actually outdated WAC) charts for Mexico that can be imported to ForeFlight: http://zeroslope.com/maps/

    What became of Diamond aircraft?

In my 2500+ hours in a DA40 I've never noticed an issue with either rudder pedal applying brake as well. Actually I'm a big fan of a free castering nose wheel... and the DA40 is much lighter in that respect than the SR20/SR22.
