    Unobtrusive external antenna

I think that the MFJ 1717 was worth a shot for the money, but it has not made a significant difference in reception over the ICom A25’s stock antenna. In saying that, please note that I am only 1.6 miles from LaGuardia and am getting good reception in the first place.

I'm French and I'll come to USA

Unfortunately, it isn’t baloney, and there are news stories today to the effect that applications by foreign students to the US are way down. Indeed, news organisations outside the US are pretty much uniformly reporting Trump’s tweets today as raising a serious question, if it wasn’t already...

Just curious on your opinion ... what next after PPL?

Glider. I’m interested in flying but I haven’t decided how far I’ll go with it. I have no interest in becoming a commercial pilot, and flying from airport to airport doesn’t appeal to me in the least as a hobby. I come at this as a guy with a fair amount of ocean sailing experience - Atlantic...

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

Maybe spend less time analyzing my posts and notice the smiley right in front of your face :)

Another guy for whom humour is a new concept.

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

I just might know that. There’s this concept called humour...

I'm French and I'll come to USA

So of course a question from a French citizen about training in the US has to turn into an ode to Donald Trump’s view of the world. So predictable at this point. DZ_Power, the way things are in the US right now, train just about anywhere else. Consider Canada, and Québec, New Brunswick or...

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

In my neck of the woods, if I want to buy a $100 hamburger I’ll go to Peter Luger, The Dutch or Daniel Bolud, and have a good bottle of wine while I’m at it. Won’t be going to JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Republic or for that matter the Hamptons airport. Meanwhile, I wouldn’t pay $100 for a...

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

That’s very cool, a great experience for the kids, and if my experience is anything to go by something that they will not forget.

    Frustrations of a CFI

Just want to say, as someone who has the money to take the more relaxed student view that some others have discussed here, and indeed defended, that Gene’s attitude toward teaching, and expectations of his students, is what I expect in an instructor. In my professional life, I value people who...

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

Rule number one. Don’t ever tell a date that you’re suggesting an airport restaurant because the food is great :)

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

I hate to tell you this, but when pilots talk about “good food” at an airport it is an exercise in wishful thinking :)

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

Still trying to understand why anyone, ever would eat at an airport restaurant, let alone spend money flying to one :)

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

I don’t think that people are deterred from learning to fly by the heightened security. But as a kid, I remember being invited into an Air Canada cockpit between Iceland and Ottawa, an experience that I’ll never forget. At the time, crews would sometimes ask people if they wanted to “come up...

    Seaplane Crash in Australia

This is worth following just to find out how it happened. The pilot was apparently highly experienced. Here's tonight's story from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: The passengers included an important British businessman, his two sons, one of them working full time on the anti-Brexit...

Florida Pilot having a bad day.

I’m pretty sure that 99.9% of people know that he was intending to be funny and that the same percentage think that he succeeded.

And then there are posts that show a sense of humour.

    Unobtrusive external antenna

Since you’re in Queens, it’s worth saying that I’m in Jackson Heights in a 6th floor apartment with nothing between me and the LGA tower that is more than 12’ above my elevation. As you can also understand, I am not about to do anything that can’t be done conveniently from my apartment window...

Diamond Aircraft is now 100% owned by a Chinese company

For those who don’t know, CRG55 is talking about a Canadian company called Bombardier. Bombardier started as the inventor of the snowmobile, also known as the Ski-Do, that my parents used as kids. We can agree to disagree about this, but my view is that the public investment in this Ski-Do...

Diamond Aircraft is now 100% owned by a Chinese company

Well here’s my take as a guy who likes their planes and has chosen to train on a DA 20. The high point of this story is when the Canadian Government, when Mr. Dries threatened to close down his factory in London, Ontario in about 2011 unless Canada “lent” him many millions of dollars, told him...
