How do you haul your mogas to the aircraft / hangar?

I removed the anti siphon valve from car, bought a 12V transfer pump from farm supply store, and pump right from car to Cessna 172. It pumps about 3 gal/minute and has inline filter. Mostly use ethanol 85 octane from station a block from airport gate. Station also has non ethanol but I use the...

What are Your Thoughts About the DPE System?

I’m a former designee (DER, not DPE, but it works the same). We had no restraints on what we could charge, even though you had to deal with us as FAA staff would not work directly with you for the most part. It really is a government sponsored monopoly, and there should be standard cost...

    ADSB traffic display question

Got an experimental EFIS unit in a C172. I replaced the original instruments with it and it’s my primary reference. The unit is pretty cool, has ADSB-in, connects to a mounted IPad and displays all the same stuff a far more expensive certified unit does. The ForeFlight AHARS and moving map work...

    Experimental Implications

This is yet another reason why experimental is so much better.

Castle nut and pin vs nylon locknuts?

Let’s go flying…….My background is mostly transport category part 25 where temps anywhere near the engine if discouraged. but During my piston development experience we used remote temperature sensors, some wired some Bluetooth, and placed them throughout the engine compartment, as well as heat...

Castle nut and pin vs nylon locknuts?

For what it’s worth….I came across same issue with FAA on a STC project. Your plane is a CAR 3 cert basis which allows for “friction bolts” in many applications but does not specifically give definition, so A&P could likely justify use of a nylon nut….FAA guidance does say the part listed in...

Famous pilots you have met.......I'll start out...

Flew with the RAF pilot that torpedoed the WW2 German warship Bismarck. I Was a CFI at SMO in 1980s. Older gentleman comes in and says was visiting US and wondered if he could fly, so we did. After he asked if I’d sign his log book….it was a leather bound RAF book and I came across an entry that...

Should I buy, join a flying club, co-own, or keep waiting?

If it flies, floats or fu*ks, it’s cheaper to rent. Owning a plane gets more expensive every year. Unless you are going to fly the wings off it, find a club or partners to reduce cost. I put a V8 engine on my C172 and got my cost down to less than $20/hr, but my hanger rent went up almost 2x...

Can an MEI (without CFII) train for add-on multiengine ratings?

If I understand your question correctly….. the non-Cfii can only sign off the student for a ME rating (VFR by default), not the IFR rating/privileges. So, the student would only end up with a ME rating on their pilots certificate for either the private or commercial certificate. Likely, when the...

Looking for CFII with 750+ hr total and 25+ hrs in a PA-32-260 for flight training in Colorado (KEIK

I know such a Cfi in Colorado Springs area…. Pm me if that may work.

    Any nonbuilder/non-gearhead owners?

A lot of speculation in these post. I have past, recent and current experience with the EX vs cert comparison, and can share my experience. I took a couple of Cessna 172’s and put aluminum V8 engines on them, for a number of reasons. They now operate in experimental category under an multi...

    C172 now, looking at C182s.

182 is a great plane. As far as aftermarket engines…. We are planning on a V8 engine kit next year for it, and expect an hourly operating cost of about $40-$45 with fuel, prop and engine reserves…. I was a partner in a mid 1970’s c182 and it was a bit expensive to fly as much as I wanted to, and...

Federal Court Decision: Flight training is carrying passengers for hire

Most posted arguments here are moot points. Reference my earlier post regarding specific FAA written policy on training in special airworthiness aircraft and experimentals. This post was about letter from FAA that was supposed to clarify policy that ran amuck of well established policy and...

Federal Court Decision: Flight training is carrying passengers for hire

The FAA letter to EAA and AOPA discussed here was in stark contrast to prior written policy and according to EAA will likely be rescinded or considerably rescinded in next couple of weeks. The letter was intended to deal with limited category training (a lot became of this issue after a war bird...

    Gates barricade hose, rough inside

I have a V8 on a C172 and run mostly ethanol car fuel…. I did a lot of research and chose the barricade hose for fuel. I use the 3/8” for feeding engine and 1/4” for return line back to tanks (its an EFI system and regulate fuel pres by returning some back to tanks….also eliminates vapor lock)...

    Experimental Cessna 172 performance

It's been done in the past, but pilot would need Panama pilot certificate, medical and mechanic .... New faa LSA rules would make it easily work.

    Experimental Cessna 172 performance

We use a marine version the LS block, then modify it for the aircraft mission. GM says they plan on producing it for an extended time, whatever that means. There are similar newer blocks that will also work. Thanks for the comments.

    Experimental Cessna 172 performance

We finally got some better cameras worth posting some videos of our C172 with V8 engine flight testing. I tried to answer many of the questions I received from the forum while flying in the pattern. The youtube link is below, or just search 'cessna 172 corsair V8 engine'. Hope some find it...

ATC - When you issue - turn right heading 270 on climbout

I think original question was based on VFR, but the AIM referenced refers to a departure, which is IFR procedure and based on TERPS (criteria used in USA for designing IFR stuff like departures, airways, arrivals, ect., which figures in obstacle clearances, thus minimum 400 ft before turns per...
