    Battle Ground VORTAC

Of course. Big Tech colluding with Big Volcano to bleed us little guys dry. How else does a "booming" economy thrive?

    Home Flight Sim Recs

I liked the overall feel of XP11 better, especially in the graphics and physics. Things just flow smoother and more realistically, in and out of the cockpit; it feels more like a simulator and less like an arcade game. Think "Gran Turismo" vs "Need for Speed" The graphics, while not...

    Home Flight Sim Recs

FWIW...I'm running XP11 on my superbudget build. Old Dell Optiplex (small form factor) I got for free from my school during a tech upgrade, 2012-ish vintage Core i7 CPU, 3.2GHz i think? i forget the model ID, no overclockability though 32GB RAM 1TB SSD Nvidia 1050Ti, which is the most robust...

How do you carry mogas to your plane?

I understand what you're saying, and I agree that the mixture is (usually) too rich to combust in a closed container. HOWEVER...you also have to consider that this is not a closed container. By pumping fresh air in, you're creating a large pocket of leaner mixture around the inlet; It's not...

How do you carry mogas to your plane?

Oof...that made me cringe. Pressurizing a gasoline can with air is a baaaaaad idea. Especially statically charged air from a plastic air mattress pump and associated tubing. Not only is it way easier to accidentally generate a spark, but that spark would be inside the artificially oxygen-rich...

Gas leak on cold start in C182

Common but not "normal." Overpriming without the engine firing over, especially in the cold when gasoline doesnt evaporate/atomize as well, will allow the fuel to pool up in the intake manifold. Depending on where the primer nozzle(s) are, eventually gravity will take the liquid down either...

    First plane

Having flown 172s, 152s, and Beech Sundowners for the vast majority of my hours, I was astounded when I took the checkout flight for my club's Cherokee 140. Hulking the stick all the way back, airspeed nonexistent, the thing just did NOT want to stall. And when i finally did get it to...

When to pull throttle idle on landing.

The answer is it depends, every single landing is different. Using a proper approach speed will leave you just enough energy in the plane to round out, flare, and touch down nicely with minimal float. If you're a touch high on the glide slope, i.e. coming in steep, you'll want to pull power...

First flight with my wife and we had an emergency landing

Sorry in advance for the rant, but this is one thing that's always severely irked me about many planes we fly; the nonsensical button/switchology varies wildly across each individual bugsmasher, even in the same model. I can get used to differences in the instrument locations, but it's beyond...

    Forget Something?

Ooof. This is why the towbar never leaves my hands unless it's secured in its spot inside the plane or hangar. Especially since I don't use them often, every second my eyes/hands aren't on it is another opportunity to forget it exists.

C150 recovery from the mountains in Utah

Oof....I never pictured Matt doing anything like that. But at the same time I can see him doing it to help people out while still making a living. Eager to see what comes of it.

C150 recovery from the mountains in Utah

Stumbled across this while following youtube rabbit holes about offroading. Well-known offroad recovery team gets a call to bring back a downed a C150H that made a (literally) forced landing in very remote terrain while encountering harsh downdrafts that it simply couldn't outclimb. Continuing...

Navigating to GPS waypoint while on FF?

Yup, i figured as much, thanks for the input. Just threw me off getting the familiar approach fix out of the blue.

Navigating to GPS waypoint while on FF?

Hey all, had an oddball situation pop up a couple days ago that made me curious, was wondering what the community's opinions were on it. Here the brief backstory: Was on a short hop from a class E field to an adjacent class C, in a VFR-only Cherokee (no operational nav equipment aside from my...

For Sale Lightspeed Sierras and Zulu 3’s

I want to stubbornly/ignorantly argue that they're not fully wireless then, but I do think that's pretty neat, lol. I'd love that capability. I honestly wasn't aware of any wireless headsets on the market and I gathered that was the reason why. Learn something new every day. Would also like...

For Sale Lightspeed Sierras and Zulu 3’s

It's the safety/redundancy factor. When the batteries die on a wired headset, you lose ANR and bluetooth but they still function just the same as a passive headset. Kill the battery in a fully wireless headset and you've effectively lost comms until you can change/charge the battery.

How hot is too hot to fly?

Likely a culmination of a few different factors. Engine overheating can certainly be an issue with students lolligagging through run-up and ground ops. DA is also a factor; even though it may not be hazardous when executed properly, it's still a consideration. Not to mention the fact that two...
