So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

For the record, I do truly appreciate your point of view because I do like thinking about these things. I'm a Network Engineer by trade so redundancy is my world and I'm always adding more to my tool belt (hopefully most for the better). The battery charge scenario did happen a couple weeks ago...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Thanks for the explanation and I can certainly agree that it's a great idea to prepare for the worse. For me personally I only fly in a Cirrus and that's the plane I'm buying so I'll always have the G1000 unless there's an electrical failure. I really don't need the iPad at all for normal...

Here's Part 1 of the video from my first solo XC.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I certainly don't want to get into a discussion about it, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm missing by folding a map versus using one on my iPad. It's the exact same map and the FAA allows me to use it. I think if I were to be in a pinch and had to look at a fold up map I would be just fine...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I'm flying a g1000 and I've never once even seen a vfr paper map. The regulations are to have a backup so I have forefight on my iPad for that. Some schools may want you to learn old school, but there's no requirement. I'll even be doing my flight planning on foreflight for my check ride and...

radio question, volume of your own mic

I'd say it depends on your audio panel, but I know the one I use has a regular volume nob on it like a car radio and then I have the separate volume control on my headset. I personally keep my headset volume almost all the way down and adjust it on the panel. Sometimes I get in and can't hear...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I suspect it can be common because I had a bit of a disconnect as well. When I was first signed off as solo I obviously just did the takeoff and landings in the pattern to officially "solo". Then the next time I went up I did the same thing, I just stayed in the pattern for an hour and a half...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Yes, the first time I was instructed to make a short approach one day by tower on the downwind and chopped the throttle for a simulated power out. I wasn't even sure if I was supposed to our not but felt perfectly safe so I did. I talked to him afterwords and he said absolutely I could do...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Cajun, I plan to do most all of my practice solo because we all know what the maneuvers are. As for stalling I don't take it all the way to stall because that part is pretty easy (lots of right rudder...). What I practice is entering slow flight without losing altitude and take it up just...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Yep, I was consistently in the upper 80's to low 90's on all the King practice tests and then got a 75% on the real. I'll take it.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Yay I passed the PPL written and I most definitely didn't get over a 90%... haha I spent quite a bit of time studying, but they had a lot of BS questions on there with multiple "could be right" answers where you had to pick the "best" answer. I hate those kinds of tests. I have 5 hours of...

My Long Solo XC Nightm.. uh, Adventure!

One of the benefits of flying a low wing is that I can see both fuel caps at all times. The first thing I do when I walk up to the plane is check the fuel levels and stick my nose in the hole to get a good sniff. I smell all my sump samples as well to make sure it smells right.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

It's a great feeling. I still find myself smiling on the drive home after a lesson thinking about how I feel like a pilot. :) btw, good luck on the medical front. I have a tinnitus disability and knew it would take a while to get through so I started my medical as soon as I took my first...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Got in a nice cross country flight on Friday morning with my CFI. We went from KLNK (Lincoln, NE) <--> KSLN (Salina, KS) <--> KSTJ (St. Joseph, MO) <--> KLNK (Lincoln, NE). It was about 380 miles and took 3.5 hours total. The weather has been sketchy all week with lots of convective activity...

    Cheap ppl

I'm at 36 now and will have a 3 hour XC this friday with my instructor. Then I'll have to get my 5 hours solo XC (assuming I get my endorsement this week) so I'll likely be in the mid to upper 40's when I get done. I did have several days where I did nothing but touch and goes for a couple...

Awesome job Cajun. I love reading about your journey and this is no exception. On the being a girl flying topic, I listen to approach and the local CTAF on my scanner at the office all day and I smile every single time I hear a woman pilot on the radio. There was a massive Air Force plane...
