Single Engine Airplanes that have a lot of room.

I went from zero to check ride in a cirrus and it was a great plane for learning. The air force uses them for training as well. They are more expensive so there's no denying that.

Single Engine Airplanes that have a lot of room.

It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it. hah I haven't sat in a lot of planes so I really don't know the differences, but I bet it has to do with seat configuration almost as much as width. Meaning you could have a lot of width, but two seats close together versus somewhat narrow...

Truth or Myth -- FAA Written Exam

I'm an engineer as well and a few weeks prior to my check ride I just so happened to see a small nick on the propeller. I researched several documents and opinions on what is too big and read a very good Hartzell paper on the topic. Then come exam time while we walked up to the plane the DPE...

Truth or Myth -- FAA Written Exam

I made some boneheaded mistakes on several questions that I knew the right answers and ended up with a 78%. I was expecting to get some extra grilling from the DPE, but when I made a comment about my score he said something to the effect of "I'd be more concerned if you got 100%" so he...

    Bonanza for Novice Pilot?

I can't speak for a Bonanza, but I trained in and am now flying a Cirrus at 60 hours and couldn't imagine flying anything else. I don't see why a Bo would be any different for you.

Single Engine Airplanes that have a lot of room.

Ditto on the SR20/22. I'm only 6' and around 215 and when I did my discovery flight with a female CFI that barely weight 110 I felt like I was smashing her through the door in a C172. The SR20 however is more like a mid sized SUV with a center console and there's plenty of room between the two...

    VFR over the top

This is the first I've heard of flying through a broken layer being illegal. Obviously it can be more challenging to find an opening, but as long as you maintain VFR clearances wouldn't it be legal?

Looks like that domain got picked up by a squatter.

    VFR over the top

lol, I noticed yours as well. My name is Tony Underwood so it's just an abbreviated TUwood that I've used since my Navy days back in the 90's.

    VFR over the top

I wish I would have taken some pictures on my trip from KSUS to KLNK on Sunday. There was a beautiful cloud layer between 5k-7kish and it had lots of puffy cumulus clouds in it. We flew over at 8500. A great tool I found for figuring out where clouds start and stop in addition to looking at...

Flying over the St. Louis arch question

I saw those too and it's the reason I hugged the edge of the 2k shelf on the south side. I left it at 1900' MSL until I was past the towers and then started my descent to pattern altitude at KSUS.

Flying over the St. Louis arch question

Thanks all for the help on this one. The flight went great and I had no problems at all flying by the Arch. As soon as I was handed off to St. Louis approach I requested a city tour by the Arch and he said no problem. He didn't give me any altitudes, I just flew around and made sure I stayed...

Flying over the St. Louis arch question

Flying over the St. Louis arch question

I have two boys going to ISU and they're life long Nebraskan's. It's still a bit of a conflict for them. One is taking summer classes so that's why we're dropping in to see him before KSUS.

Flying over the St. Louis arch question

My wife and I are flying into KSUS Friday morning and of course the first thing she tells me tonight is that she wants to fly by the arch and take a picture from the air. o_O From an airspace standpoint it seems pretty simple to just stay under the 80/30 bravo shelf and fly a lap around St...

COPA CPPP next weekend in KSUS

Now you're just being ridiculous. There's absolutely no reason to wait until 100 feet. 10 is usually more than sufficient. o_O

    Another Cirrus down, 6-18-2016

The reason I say within parameters is that it's not going to save you if you're in a terminal nose dive and your wings have ripped off and it's not going to save you if you pull it 50' off the ground . There was an unfortunate incident where CAPS was deployed at I believe an estimated 300kts...
