    cockpit organization and checklist use

Wow, thank you all for your responses to my original post. As always, lots of passionate discussion on POA. :-) I do believe in flows, but always, always verify with a checklist. I make my own checklist so I can add things like "turn on Stratus" or "write down takeoff time." I have it both on...

    cockpit organization and checklist use

I'm a student pilot ready for my solo cross-country but made a stupid mistake this past weekend: forgetting my landing checklist. We were returning from a long cross-country dual flight, landing at KSQL. My instructor had stated that he would remain silent for the whole flight unless I was about...

    Watch recommendation

Thanks all for the recs. James331, the Traverse Alpha looks great. Does it record GPS track though? And does it show current speed and distance? And swimming with it? 48dodge: the Citizen doesn't have GPS, does it? rolivi: the D2 looks good. Have you tested it underwater? Do you have a photo...

    Watch recommendation

Fellow pilots, student pilots, and wannabe pilots, Any recommendation for a versatile watch that is good for IFR flying, switching tanks, records tracks of my marathon training and swimming (has a GPS), alerts by vibrating, does not have to be coupled to a phone, has decent battery life...

Proposed Restrictions at San Carlos Airport (SQL)

I live in Menlo Park, right next to Atherton, and my Menlo Park neighbors also complain about the approach to SQL. They also complain about the left Dumbarton departure from Runway 31 at PAO as well as the jet traffic approach to SFO 28L/R. Most of them are stay-home spouses of very wealthy...

Proposed Restrictions at San Carlos Airport (SQL)

Too bad I would not be able to make it to the meeting due to work. But I wish my wealthy neighbors from Atherton would stop whining and think a bit less about themselves. They already own the largest, most expensive real estate in the area. They are the one percent of the top one percent. And...

    Can't Fly, I'm Bored - Photo Time

That's a great lens. I have its midrange counterpart, the 24-70 f2.8 II. Amazing optics. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Transponder on altitude reporting while on ground

Never expected my simple post would generate such a spirited discussion. I see the validity of both sides. For what it's worth, FAA SAFO on 5/19/15 stated that "To proactively address these problems, aircraft operating on all airport movement areas at all airports, not just those that are...

Transponder on altitude reporting while on ground

I rent and always find the transponder set to "standby" by the previous renter. Is this a common practice? I thought FAA SAFO 15006 made it clear about setting transponders to altitude reporting on movement areas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    One hand on the yoke?

How does one fly hands off in steep turns??? In the PA-28 I have no aileron trim, and I always need a bit of opposite aileron to counter the overbanking tendency. In fact, steep turns are the only time I, as a newbie student pilot, use both hands, to pull up on the yoke as I don't like to trim...

    Typical Instruction Rates

Around here, CFIs are paid from handshake to handshake--from preflight planning to end of debriefing. Isn't that the same elsewhere? Why should they be paid just for Hobbs time? As a student, I think it's fair that they get paid for all the time working with you, on the ground and in the air...

    Typical Instruction Rates

Cheapest CFIs in the Bay Area peninsula area are around $60. Most are $70-$100. Lessons are usually 3-hr blocks with 1.5 to 2 Hobbs. Piper Archer is around $135. So one lesson is around $380-$450. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Can we talk about checklists

As a renter, I also make my own checklists. I want to include my own items such as personal minimums, "ANR on," "Stratus on," etc. They are PDF files viewed in Foreflight. Separate ones for Warrior, Archer II, and Archer III. Just copy and modify. As midlifeflyer has mentioned, it's very easy...

    Stopping the bleeding

Many wonderful advices here already, but I'm curious--do you often stutter when under pressure in non-flying contexts, eg. when presenting at work or speaking in public? If so, you might want to discuss with your primary care physician about a referral to a speech-language pathologist. Sent...

    Insight requested

Perhaps you just need to have a chat with your instructor to go over your concerns. Ask for a bit of ground before each time, even if it's just 5 minutes to go over the procedures and answer any questions you may have from your reading. And ask for a debriefing session at the end of each flight...
