    I love retractable gear airplanes

I love my retract bird. But this is a pretty fun plane to fly also, even though it’s quite a bit slower than my plane. I guess it depends on the mission.

    Air Mobility Command Museum

Clearly a moated starfort (Saw a PBS show years ago called Connections which is where I learned about starforts), but I had no idea we had those in the US. A quick google search for starforts in America turned up the following. http://www.starforts.com/delaware.html The fort in the picture...

Looking to get back in the cockpit

Well, I didn’t take quite as long a break as you, but I got my Private certificate in 1989, moved from Tennessee to California and didn’t fly again until 2011. The biggest challenge of getting back into flying is learning all of the new regulations, airspace, etc. The mechanics of flying...

The hemispherical rule and altitude at pilots discretion

Flying in the SF Bay area, I once heard ATC ask a guy who was on flight following to explain why he wasn’t flying at a legal VFR altitude for his direction of flight. They do notice. I interpret pilot’s discretion as still being subject to the FARs.

NA - You have 1 hour to talk to your dog. What's the conversation?

You’re lucky. Ours lost her sight at a relatively young age pretty much in a couple of days. Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS). No known treatment. She still does okay getting around, although she bumps into things every now and then. Losing her hearing was tougher...

That’s an amazing resemblance. And yours is also blind and deaf?

NA - You have 1 hour to talk to your dog. What's the conversation?

You’re almost 15 years old now, and you lost your sight suddenly 8 years ago. How much do you remember being able to see? Do you still think about it? Do your nose and sense of smell adequately compensate? And now you are completely deaf and have been for over a year now. I wish you...

    KSNA Departure Confusion

KSJC san Jose (class C) usually asks to say altitude. Typical conversation with tower on departure goes something like this: Tower: N89EL, wind xxx @ x, cleared for takeoff runway 31L. On departure turn left heading 180. Caution wake turbulence for the 737 that just departed the parallel...

    Garmin 430 Approach Activation question

Agree. Stay away from vectors to final. It’s good to have all the waypoints available. Another way to activate an approach is to highlight the next waypoint in the flight plan page and hit menu-> Activate leg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

So tell me about VPNs and phones

I second the point about the router needing to be beefy to prevent slowdowns. By beefy, I mean having a powerful CPU and high CPU clock rate. I just tested enabling a VPN client on my router, an Asus RT.68AC with two CPU cores running at 1GHz, and my download speed went from 300ish MB/s to...

Help me upgrade my Decathlon VFR panel

Well, I’m not all that active in Advantage because I just fly the biplane once a month or so. I’ve never rented any of their other planes, so I may not be the best person to compare the clubs from an average renter’s standpoint. Before buying my plane in 2012, I did do a fair amount of...

    Figuring out the wind?

Agreed. I would define, and I think most pilots would agree, that a turn is a change in the heading of the plane, not a change of the track across the ground. Think of it this way. If one is flying along holding a constant heading and flies into an area where there is a crosswind, the track...

Great Lakes crash in San Diego, Ca

Always a somewhat scary time right after major work. My mechanic insisted on putting the first hour on the plane himself after putting a new engine on. In this case, I think that if it were I, with major work having been done to my engine, I would be using 28R full length every time. More...

    Straightest Flight ever?

San Jose to Palo Alto is pretty straight when departing RW 30L and landing 31. If the winds are right, Palo Alto to San Jose is also pretty much straight in: Rw 13 to 12R. It’s also an extremely quick flight.

Great Lakes crash in San Diego, Ca

Yep, I’m afraid you’re right about the stall spin. It looks like it just pancaked into that area next to the factory. It’s impossible to know how I would react in a similar situation, but I hope that reviewing accidents like this will at least cause me to think about a plan at every takeoff...

Great Lakes crash in San Diego, Ca

Looks that way. I’m glad that both people survived, and I hope for speedy recoveries. Armchair flying here, etc., but it seems like it would have been better to turn left to land instead of right. I fly a Great Lakes with a similar paint scheme, so this one has got me thinking. Assuming he...
