    Overcoming extreme nervous/irrational fears

The bolded makes me feel better. I don't have anything to judge on "where I am" (if that makes sense) other than the CFI says I'm doing fine and haven't come up with anything he hasn't seen yet. I just FEEL like I must suck based on the posts and videos of 1st time flyers having no issues.

    Overcoming extreme nervous/irrational fears

I have ATTEMPTED most take offs for the last 2-3 lessons. I have ATTEMPTED most landings for the last 2-3 lessons. Being told I should be able to handle this by now just reinforces the "maybe I'm not cut out for this".

    Overcoming extreme nervous/irrational fears

We've been working on slow flight, power on and power off stalls, working with trim & power, and some steep turns. Seven lessons, all of which have had me make at least one approach, most of which I F-up.

    Overcoming extreme nervous/irrational fears

So I'm just under 10 hours into my PPL, and am having a problem that neither I nor my CFI have ideas on how to solve... I get extremely nervous at take off and landing (landings being the worst). I've taken off 4-5 times, of which 2 have been "acceptable". I have a hard time staying on the...

Should I get a handheld avionics radio?

Stupid question... Could you use this while flying as a commercial passenger? Obviously not to transmit, but to listen to what your pilots are doing?

    Hearing Stall Warning Horn

Have not. That is one of my concerns.

    Hearing Stall Warning Horn

I did once when the CFI was demonstrating. He wanted me to work on imminent stalls and recover when I heard the horn.

    Hearing Stall Warning Horn

This is a Cessna (172). CFI didn't seem to have a problem hearing it and he said he has bad hearing. I don't know if it's the plane, my headset, or me. When I said "I couldn't hear it on my own", I was referring to "by myself", I heard it more through the intercom.

    Hearing Stall Warning Horn

I had my 3rd flight yesterday evening. We worked on imminent stalls, power on & power off stalls. I had a hard time hearing the stall warning horn. According to my CFI, I was missing it for at least 5 knots (if it was going off at 60 knots, I wouldn't hear it until we reached 55 knots). In...

    Stupid Wx minimum question

Basically all I wanted to confirm is the data point in the chart (500' below for example) is where the airplane needs to be in relation to the clouds. That's what I thought it was saying, but I didn't want to assume.

    Stupid Wx minimum question

I appreciate you pointing me to the regs, I wanted to make sure I was reading them right. The chart says "distance from clouds" and "500 feet below". While I thought that mean the plane would need to be 500 feet below, I could see it being read as "clouds need to be 500 feet below". Not...

    Stupid Wx minimum question

Speaking of the 3/1-152: 3 miles (or 1 depending) visibility, 1000' above, 500' below, 2000' horizontal for clouds. BUT, I just want to confirm for the 1000' & 500'... that's where the plane is in relation to the clouds? So the plane would need to be 1000' above the clouds or 500' below...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I've got two hours in. :P Second flight felt more comfortable than the first.

Should I get a sectional subscription?

@john745, it sounds like you and I might be close on our "paths". I've had one training flight and the second is next week. I did download Avare. It's free. As in free free, not 30 day free (that I can find so far). Just playing with it at home, it seems to do the basics (shows sectionals...

Should I get a sectional subscription?

As someone else who is just starting training, did you have/carry more than one copy of the sectional? Because if you highlight a sectional for a flight from A>B, then a couple of days or weeks later, you want to go from A>D, and some days after that A>E, etc, doesn't your sectional get marked...

    Want to start...

I had my first flight instruction last night. Despite reading and watching videos, I felt like I did everything wrong. I couldn't taxi straight, I couldn't hold a consistent pitch, I couldn't hold a consistent bank, I held a "death grip" on the yoke, I spent too much time looking at the...

    Want to start...

I know that's what he meant. I was trying to make a joke. No, I'm not making a career out of it. Thank you @odie451. Frankfort is about 45 minutes to an hour from my home. I might look into that.

    Want to start...

What is EAA? As far as the loan, we're doing as part of a debt consolidation, and the interest we're saving on that debt will actually help with the flying. I did go to the SSA website and there is literally nothing listed in my entire state. ETA: The loan would be for "education"... flying...

    Want to start...

I can't really argue with them. That would be my preference. But I'm going to be like you, if I don't get a loan, I might as well not start. There's ALWAYS going to be something needed that would take money away from lessons. And, currently rates are fairly low, so it makes sense (if you're...
