So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Thanks! I did forget to mention one very odd coincident that occurred yesterday. While on the "warmup laps" with my CFI, I got a call on the radio asking if I'd soloed yet. Pure happenstance that the CFI I was handed off to at the flight school that had closed down was at KGDJ that day (think...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Soloed on 11/18/2022. The day before my 60th birthday. 29.2 hours in the logbook (can/should I count the 1 hour glider I got for a father's day gift?). Why so many hours? I have had fits and starts on my journey to PP/ASEL. I started out with a CFI I really, really enjoyed. Very hands-off...

    B17 crash at Dallas.

Did anybody else notice the biplane on the ground just barely ahead of where the main wreckage came down? The flames could have easily made three planes involved in that incident. ETA, I heard of this incident at a very inopportune time. I had just finished some pre-solo maneuvers with my CFI...

    Carb Heat in rain

Interesting question. According to the POH for a training aircraft I flew this week (N584SF), the POH for a 1968 Cessna 172 and Skyhawk states: From page 2-11 "The use of full carburetor heat is recommended during flight in heavy rain to avoid the possibility of engine stoppage due to excessiv,e...

    Garmin Pilot Question

You have very good points. Hence the invention of Avare. Very good (but basic) EFB. Oh, and you just can't beat the price...

    Knee replacement

It took about a month for me to be comfortable driving again after the right knee was replaced. Two weeks after the right shoulder and I was like a new man. A month after the left shoulder, and I was still having some problems turning the steering wheel, but by month two I was fine. That was...

1 dead, 2 seriously injured in C172 crash at Newport News/Williamsburg International (KPHF)

Ohhh, that explains it. My wife said her mother called today and worked very diligently at having her convince me to give up flight training. Her mother lives in Hampton. Now I see how she even heard of the incident. Back in the 80's when I worked for the shipyard there I flew in and out of...

Is basic flight simulators fun or boring?

Man, it was horrible. I tried all of the mods and it just didn't work for me. A climbing right or left turn was miserable - unless you used both hands. Kinda' hard to do that and keep a hand you don't have on the throttle. I think that the bushings for radial alignment aren't sufficiently...

Plane down at middle school football field

It was an attempt at a joke. Several here are not a fan of DG in the least. I find him entertaining, and he really does try research these types of accidents. His delivery methods are what offends a lot of people. Juan Browne is another good source for information on accidents. Sometimes if...

Is basic flight simulators fun or boring?

If the push-pull T/P/M is what you're looking for, also check out the Turtle Beach Velocity One. Of course, the issue with that choice is that the yoke has a full 180 degree total travel arc. It would be less expensive than buying the Logitech Yoke/Throttle Quadrant and the Cessna style T/P/M...

Plane down at middle school football field

Shouldn't we all stop speculating on this incident? DG's Probable Cause will be along shortly.

Coast Guard helo takes fire (Gulf of Mx, 9/18/22)

Funny, I was thinking he was referring to meth cooking labs.

Is basic flight simulators fun or boring?

If you do decide to build a home simulator, avoid the mistake I made. I started out with the Saitek/Logitech Yoke and Throttle Quadrant. While the TQ was good, the yoke is miserable. Since it only has a total of 90 degrees of travel, all of your inputs will be exaggerated. I replaced those...

    X-Plane 12 is now available.

Downloading the demo now. It's gonna take some time. But, not nearly as long as downloading all eleventy-bazillion GB of MSFS 2020. I don't think you have to use the Vulkan engine, but it improves performance by leaps and bounds. I don't think AMD supports Vulkan yet, just NVIDIA (and never...

    X-Plane 12 is now available.

I am tempted to download it tonight. For the record, I have MSFS-X. I like it because it runs flat out on any newer computer, and that's what I started out with. The only model I use in it is the C-172, and it matches the dated C-172's in use at the local flight school. The characteristics...

    X-Plane 12 is now available.

If anybody's interested, the beta version X-Plane 12 download is now available. Same as with XP-11, there is a free trial to allow you to determine whether or not your system is capable of running the new simulator.

Should I be worried about renewing my medical?

I would worry that you could receive a never-ending series of phone calls from an FAA job recruiter! Or, possibly some other government agency.

    Home Flight Sim Recs

I can't get the rudder pedals dialed in with MSFS 2020. They work fine under MSFS-X, XP-11 and FlightGear Simulator 2020.
