    Class 2 medical reasoning

I understand that, but with a zero-hour student who, by definition, does not know how to fly, it seems like the "protecting the public" mantra is working backwards.

    Class 2 medical reasoning

I have been trying to figure out the logic of government regulations (perhaps I should be put away). :D A student pilot with zero hours buys an airplane in Texas and hires me for $700 as a CFI to fly it with him to Wisconsin. A Class 3 medical is required and we log the two-day flight as dual...

RWY closed except over 12500 lbs.

KHIO has a NOTAM that closes a runway to aircraft under 12500 lbs for one day (tomorrow). Any idea why this would be?

    Flying through area 51

I flew SGU to RNO on Saturday. We went through the MOA (cold) under Flight Following. How could you not know about the vast Restricted Areas there?

    PPL Write up (kinda long)

I have more than 1300 hours and have yet to make a perfect flight. A while back I had to demonstrate a steep spiral for a commercial student. I don’t think I had done one since my CFI checkride and cautioned my student that it might not be perfect, but it turned out ok. Practice more, the...

    PA-44 down in Oregon

I do power-on stalls with full flaps with all my students. For my spin endorsement we did I think 5 in a 172 but I had done maybe 8 or so in a Decathlon.

Tell me about being a CFI.

I think this would pick up only those who got a new certificate about 2 years ago as a BFR won't show up in the database. I teach via a flight school, but also do Flight Reviews, IPCs, etc on the side and have a couple outside instrument students. I prefer the instrument and commercial guys as...

This does not look like “almost recovered”.

    Another influencer CFI kills student

I have seen this with the 300-hour CFI graduates. A while back I flew with a CFI who I would not have signed off to solo. How does this happen?

Advertising yourself as an independent cfi? Where and how do you do it

I teach out of a local flight school, but I also have a website for my own independent CFI work.

    DPE availability in unacceptable

I expect to start a new instrument student in October and we can be finished by the end of the year, but will have to book a February checkride it seems.

    DPE availability in unacceptable

I am located in Nevada and every DPE seems to be booked into 2024. I have a student who was working on his IR, then sold his airplane and paused for a while. Now he has resumed but some DPEs are saying no checkrides are available until May 2024. That's crazy. It looks like February is the...

Which trainer to get High Altitude / Pressurized endorsement in?

Just unbuckle the seatbelt and boost yourself up a bit. I’m sure you can get your head above the altitude of the static port.

    Mag always grounded

I think we eliminated the switch as it does it with the old one reinstalled. We closed it up late yesterday so hopefully a fresh look this morning reveals something. Just frustrating.

    Mag always grounded

During an inspection on a Cherokee 180, we installed a new ignition so that we can have a single key for door/baggage/ignition. Everything was working fine beforehand. Now it seems the right mag is always grounded. We swapped the old ignition in with the same results. I have certainly seen...

    Coast-to-Coast Flight Training

61.195 makes no mention of getting paid. Hard to imagine someone would do this for free.

    Coast-to-Coast Flight Training

Lots of us CFIIs are not interested in time building. It seems like a fast trip so I’d be careful about 61.195, but that’s on him, not you.

LPV as alternate. 600 or 800 feet?

Then hopefully they will change 61.65(d)(2)(ii)(C) so as to not effectively require VOR, ILS and GPS approaches.

Flight school train on grass strip?

I am not willing to solo a student over the Sierras to a grass strip. We could potentially go somewhere in the California Central Valley on a dual flight, but it’s a long way to find grass… 170nm or so. There may well be some that I don’t know about but it’s not like the Midwest.
