    Revoked license.

If you came to me with a logbook containing one entry for a discovery flight, a student license, and medical, how would I know about any revocation unless you told me or I really dug for it? Why was your license revoked?

Charged With DUI When I Wasn’t Driving

I am shocked at the number of time this comes up on all the various pilot boards. Very glad that I do not drink and can count the number of times I’ve had alcohol on one hand… all a very long time ago.

    Am I being unreasonable?

Most sims I have used are overly sensitive in pitch and so the first flight in the plane is attitude flying. Maybe they get it quickly and we can move on, but I find that it generally takes some practice before they are ready for more advanced things. This sim is great for procedures, so hold...

    Am I being unreasonable?

Your first flight should be attitude instrument flying - straight and level, standard rate turns, change of airspeed in level flight, constant speed climbs and descents, constant rate climbs and descents, then moving into climbing and descending turns. You also need to be figuring out...

    CFI Insurance

Your CFI checkride counts for wings credit. Your DPE will have to approve it, but it should get you to the next level of Wings.

Own a Flight School or Rental Business? Leaseback Rant!

I have a plane (Cherokee 180) on leaseback with a school. It has been reasonably profitable but I treat it as a business and have my own personal plane (Dakota) that is not on leaseback. You need to have a good relationship with the school. I am semi retired and a CFI so much of my instruction...

selecting a CFI to work with

I am a bit of the odd-one-out at the school I work out of. I am 51, have about 1400 hours and am not headed to the airlines. most of my hours are real-world flying my plane around the US (41 states), Bahamas, Mexico, Cuba, and Guatemala. I only take 2-3 students at a time. When a young...

    Found my night VFR limit

I take my Private students out to rural Nevada on moonless nights for their dual night XC. I think part of the purpose of these is to instill a heathy respect, and perhaps mild fear, for just how dark it is out there. Flying at night is not to be taken lightly.

Failed my first opportunity to solo

Yeah, it’s really never 110%. Soloing a student is a hugely responsible decision for the CFI.

Failed my first opportunity to solo

I would never tell my student "today you will (conditionally) solo". They would know they are close, but when a few trips around the pattern go extremely well, I'd just tell them to pull off the runway and give me their logbook. I'd sign it, and step out. I think your CFI put too much pressure...
