Question on if the C-177 is a good plane?

We've owned our 1976 177B FG Cardinal for 2 years now and have flown it 350 hours so far. Before that we owned a 1976 Cessna 172M Skyhawk for 3 years and 380 hours (and rented 152's, 172's, 182's, & Cherokee 140/160/180's for 10 years before that). I really wanted to move up to a 182 but I...

    Tru Trak vizion

The shop that did my install charged me $2,500 and estimated it took him about 30 hours. (A little more than he originally estimated but way more than TruTrak’s overly optimistic estimate for a first time install. Besides a missing part in the kit (which TruTrak promptly overnighted so it...

    Tru Trak vizion

Why would having to disconnect it for the last 700’ make it not legal to use for the rest of approach?

    Tru Trak vizion

Congratulations on the new AP! I’ve been flying my C177 for 8 months now with the TruTrak and absolutely love it. One tip to offer if you haven't already figured it out; when doing constant speed descents using altitude preselect, set your target altitude and vertical speed, make a preliminary...

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

Glad to hear your install is close to finishing up, I’m looking forward to your impressions on the TruTrak after you get a chance to fly with it. The buttonology takes a little getting used to but it begins to make sense pretty quick.

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

When you push the CWS to change heading it will ignore any slight deviation in altitude and vertical speed and keep your previously selected altitude. I don’t remember the exact threshold but its never been a problem as long as I somewhat maintain my altitude during the heading change. (I’ll...

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

I would call having the TruTrak installed on the right side of the panel a minor annoyance and definitely not a deal breaker. The numbers are plenty big enough to read and the knobs and buttons close enough to reach easily. It was also easy to incorporate it into my scan to monitor the trim...

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

Found this in the installation manual... Overall width: 3.180" Overall Height: 4.234" The diagram also shows the distance from the center hole to the top/bottom edges of the display. You will also need to install a small 3-position switch nearby for the FF/Both/EGT switch. I have my 830...

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

I’d be glad to! I’ll be out at the hanger this afternoon fueling up for tomorrow’s monthly fly-in breakfast at Ponca City (KPNC), I’ll measure it then. Daniel

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

I like having the EDM830 in the center stack and it seems less out of place there to me. Where your Hobbs meter is located is about where my TruTrak is installed now. It works but it would be better if it were closer. Once you install the engine monitor you won't need the EGT or OAT gages...

    TruTrak install in C177B Cardinal

I’ve made several long XC flights (500 plus NM) and a dozen or so shorter XC’s (including actual and practice approaches) with the TruTrak so far and would definitely recommend it. I can’t fairly compare it to the Trio though since I’ve never used one and haven’t seen any reviews on it yet. I...

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

I apologize for the delayed follow up but the problem turned out to be the ARINC 429 Channel 1 input on the 430w. The installer confirmed in about 5 minutes the next morning that'd he'd accidently set it to "Traffic Advisory" instead of "ADSB TFC" I flew it later that day and it worked...

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

That’s definitely possible but since it had the error message before it left the shop I’m pretty sure it’s going to turn out to be a setting in either the transponder or the 430. They’re going to look at it tomorrow.

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

Oh, forgot to add: the messages on the 345 weren’t related. Turns out I only get them when I power up in the hanger or have the 430 off or in configuration mode and its not receiving a gps signal.

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

We’ve talked about doing PnP missions so I’d be interested in the contact. I know a guy from the DFW area that goes to school in AR that’s done at least one mission so far and I tagged along with him. He’s a good pilot and trying to build hours so I’ll pass it on to him too.

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

Thanks for confirming that it’s not normal, it just didn’t sound right to me. Hopefully it’s just a configuration problem and not wiring. Any chance you could get a picture of your AIRINC 429 and RS232 configuration pages for comparison? I finally got to fly it today and no surprise, it still...

    GNS 430w & GTX 345 Configuration

I just got my airplane back from the shop Monday after having a Garmin GTX-345 transponder and a PS Engineering PMA8000BT audio panel installed and wanted to verify the configuration settings are correct. I get a "Not receiving input data on 429 Channel #1" message when I power up followed...

Help Needed - OK (or nearby) Pilots

Christiansen Aviation at KRVS and Sundance Flight Academy at KHSD may still allow overnight rentals but they’ll require a checkout with a CFI beforehand and a minimum 3-4 hour per day charge. Christiansen rents mostly Cessnas from 152 trainers to G1000 172s. Sundance has Piper Cherokee 140’s...

    TKM MX300 Issue

I recently bought a used TKM MX300 to replace the original ARC RT328T in my Cardinal and the COM reception seems really weak and I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or similar experience. By the time I'm 20-25 nm from the airport the ATIS and departure control are almost unreadable...
