If you had 3 months to travel in your plane, where would you go?

Mary and I would do the southwest and left coast, maybe a National park or two along the way home. We would also like to do Italy, Ireland and France. A return trip for my bride to Ireland and Italy but all new destinations for me.

    Galveston, Texas PIREP ?

Mary and I are headed to Charleston for a few days get-away and have decided to make the additional hop south west to Galveston for a few days. I'm looking for any good info on places to eat, stay or must see that you have first hand knowledge of.

Do You Wash Your Wife's Car?

I fill it with gas and try and get it to the car wash on a regular basis. Her SUV resides in the garage most days because we use my suv around town and with the dog. We mostly break hers out for travel.

    Quick back to back approaches…..Normal?

:D BTDT. Recent return trip from Vero Beach heading north into my fuel stop at KLRO - Mt. Pleasant SC. I was given a vector then direct to the CHS VOR expect vectors for GPS 17 into LRO. Controllers switched and the next guy gave me direct GINNE, an initial approach fix on GPS 17. Chug and...

The two happiest days of a pilot...

The guy that bought our plane in May 2018 brought his CFI with him and they flew it from our home base ocean city MD to Camarillo CA, coast to coast. The guy has yet to get his PPL and I haven’t seen the plane fly in ages. It’s a shame because we flew that plane everywhere and often and now...

The two happiest days of a pilot...

I hated watching our first plane fly off without me in the left seat, it wasn't a happy day. My bride and I still miss that plane even though we have our Commander in the hangar, ready to fly. Our Commander has been a great travel machine but there is something about your first. ;)

    LAHSO Why all the fuss?

Flew into Newport News KPHF recently and they were landing on two runways, two-five and two-two. I was cleared two-five with a LAHSO request which was no problem on the 8003’ runway. Have had the same request at Wilmington KILG a few times.

When do you slowdown to VA

When I fly I don’t mind some bumps but when I can’t click on or twist knobs on the GPS, or my seat starts to feel like it drops out , I pull back to maneuvering speed. This is a hobby and I don’t get paid to fly. We do have to pay to maintain our aircraft so why push a 45 year old airframe. On...

what's in your flight bag, middle age edition

I carry a Caden camera bag for my video cameras (5), two power bank batteries, iPad mini 5, Foreflight Sentry, and miscellaneous power cables. Headsets and camera mounts stay in the plane. For overnight trips I toss in Tylenol arthritis and some Advil, just in case the body tells me it's had...

Planning long cross country fuel stops

I use foreflight for the initial full route plan and then look at fuel prices for my stops. My bride and I like to get out and stretch every three hours so I look for a fuel stop in that range usually leaning toward 3.5 hours and based on available approaches and fuel prices for the final...

    Collins VHF 251 not transmitting?

I used stellar Avionics to repair one and freshen up the nav unit of my Collins radios that were in my Sundowner. I made a call and shipped radios out, they did a great job. https://stellaravionics.com/

    Learning new avionics

Congrats on the avionics upgrade! I would grab a safety pilot just for eyes out while you work through the "buttonology" and get actual hands on the unit in VFR conditions. Spending some time on the sim for your unit will also help learn the flow. I know if I'm not flying on a regular basis...

Remote Tower test at JYO (Leesburg, VA)

Don't remember the dates but I do remember the frustration. I'll make a few calls to some folks I worked with when I ran various projects at the airports for the Delaware River and Bay Authority. I've been retired from there almost nine years, can't say I miss the place. I do miss the folks I...

Remote Tower test at JYO (Leesburg, VA)

They tried something like this at KMIV - Millville NJ, it was terrible. I am glad it went away, less confusion, and more open air time to hear actual position calls for those that used a radio.
