    PIREP Garmin GPS 175

I agree you would likely get pretty tired pretty quick with the 175 where you have it shown. I think I would bite the bullet and cut a hole in the new panel.

    Tailwheel instruction recommendations

Personally, I think sitting on the aircraft centerline makes it easier.

What the Heck is this Symbol?

I thought it meant there is a Baskin-Robbins on the field! :)

Can you get IR without VOR/ILS receivers?

    I know, I am a dinosaur! :)

    TKM has closed down

Say what you will, but I personally do not think TKM radios were/are junk. I flew with one for 16 years with no more problems that I had with a KX-155 I had previously. And I don’t consider myself “too cheap” to buy a good radio. :). Frugal maybe, but not cheap!

Can you get IR without VOR/ILS receivers?

I guess I didn’t read far enough. I think it is wise to have ground-based equipment along with GPS anyway. Thanks, guys, for taking the time to enlighten me! I really appreciate it!

Can you get IR without VOR/ILS receivers?

The FAA does say: d. Alternate Airport Considerations. For the purposes of flight planning, any required alternate airport must have an available instrument approach procedure that does not require the use of GPS. I think you need both.

    Clouds

They looked like lenticular to me also. You don’t have to have Rockies size mountains to get some pretty significant turbulence if the winds are high.

How to transition from renting trainers to purchasing a larger plane?

Lots of things to consider, but as far as the actual flying, heavier than a 140 but they fly similarly. You won’t have an issue with the flying.

Question about what type of plane

I think you would be better served to start in the 172

    Dear auto manufacturers.....[rant]

I wish I had my 914 back! Everything was manual with no bells and whistles other than being a blast to drive! That was bells and whistles enough.

    Opinions on a C172C purchase

From a cursory scan of the ad, that one really isn't a whole lot different than the 172 you are passing on. You should talk with your wife. Two doors are favored by a lot of foks over a single door, climbing up on the wing and over the right seat.

Spin Training in 172 for CFI endorsement

My thinking is that if you are going to be teaching people to fly, you should be fully competent in all aspects of aircraft flight regimes, including spins. You owe it to your future students. Doing the minimum in a 172 doesn’t seem to me adequately preparing you.

    Switch from ground to tower

The bold text says while taxiing towards the runway, which I guess could be interpreted before you actually get to the runway (which would be the hold short line). Nit picking, but maybe that is what Gleim was trying to convey?

    Sleep Apnea and Basic Med?

From my experience (not for myself) sleep apnea can cause a lot of issues with your heart and other things, depending on how severe it is. I agree with 1CT, get checked out.

    Night Flying is Magical

A really nice write-up, Talkingbob! Night flying can indeed be serene and beautiful, especially during the summer after the daytime thermals have ceased. Your story reminds me why I love flying— not to “get somewhere” necessarily (though that can be enjoyable also) as so many of our fellow...

Gold Seal or Rod Machado for IFR Ground

Congratulations on passing the written!! There is a huge amount of knowledge to have pounded into your head for instrument flying and passing the FAA written. I used King when I did mine, but it would be a very difficult task for anybody putting together a ground school (in person, online...
