    Daily Pic

I flew to Lakefront in New Orleans KNEW yesterday and had to get something out of the plane today. The Cardinal was parked with a lot of kerosene burners today. It’s nice that the folks at Flightline First give me the same great service that they give the guys in the jets. Gary

    Engine Corrosion

I base out of KLBX, south of Houston. My hanger is less than 15 miles from the gulf coast and sits to the North of the coast. My experience does not match what RAM claims. Maybe using Phillips XC 20-50 and CamGuard is what makes the difference. Gary

Does anyone use Victor Airways anymore?

I flew along the coast from KLBX south of Houston to New Orleans Lakefront, KNEW, yesterday. I filed and was assigned two different victor airways that happened to align with my route. It didn’t change my plan but cut down on the number of things that were discussed when they issued the...

Ever had anything stolen out of your airplane?

I bought a 56 172 to take my primary training in. During the first flight with my instructor we flew the plane from my airport, KLBX south of Houston, the short distance to his hanger at KAXH. That eliminated the issue of us getting together to fly until he could sign me off to fly solo from...

    10 Day Instrument

I took the 7 day course at Gatts in Kansas. The weather cooperated and we flew actual IMC starting on day one then found IMC to fly in most days of the course. I went from getting so far behind the plane that I’d have the instructor take control on the first day to being comfortable and...

Hindsight is 20/20....or maybe 1SM and clear of clouds

The time my wife and I sat at a ‘beautiful’ FBO for 3 hours under an 800’ ceiling, but looking at sunshine less than 10 miles away, is what led to my wife deciding I needed to get my IFR. I got it the next year and it’s made long cross country trips much easier to take since then. I also...

    Paint touch up

Just keep in mind that as you start to touch up spots you’ll find more spots. It never ends. Gary

    ForeFlight/Stratus AHRS feature reliable?

I have my 2S on the floor under the back of the pilots seat with hard-power and external antennas mounted to the inside of back side windows. The AHRS feature is rock solid and I believe I could use it to get down in an emergency.

Another rent vs buy for PPL...

This is a long response. I bought a 56 172 with 900 SMOH, two nav-coms with ILS indicators, and a Venturi, for $25,000 to do my PPL flight training. That was in the early 90’s. I put $2000 down and financed the rest through AOPA/BofA for 20 years. That made my payment $300 a month. My first...

    WAAS vs. Non-WAAS GPS

I have a Cardinal RG with a 430 non WAAS. I fly IFR regularly and want at least an alternate that has an ILS but so far in the 6 years since I’ve gotten my RG the difference in minimums between the LNAV and a VNAV approach has never been a factor for me. Most of my flying is in Texas so most...

    First Annual in progress...

You can do the tires yourself. I think it’s a good way to start on the list of approved maintenance items an owner is allowed to do under the regs. Whenever I rotate the tires I also clean and grease the wheel bearings. It’s easy to do while the wheels are off. At a minimum my IA wants it...

student pilot looking to buy C150

First, if your looking at a 150 in the Dallas area John Effinger is the one to talk to about a pre-buy. He knows more than most about Cessnas and will tell it like it is. I used AOPA/Bank of America for my first plane (a 1956 172) and Red River Bank in Minnesota for my Cardinal RG. AOPA...

    Air-to-Air Cessna Citation

Jack Fantastic photos. Did you get the Bo or find someone to take you up? I know you’ve been thinking about getting a faster photo-ship. gary

Bought myself an early Christmas present.

I got mine from a bicycle site for around $30. It has a quick connect schrader valve that locks on and won’t release pressure from the strut when I remove it. It also has a gauge that makes it easy to get the pressure just right. Just remember to have the strut fully extended when setting the...

    Who Flies Real IFR?

Seeing the runway where it should be when I drop out of the clouds is one of my favorite things. Makes me smile every time.
