How reliable will ATC vector you around thunderstorms?

On my first real cross country after getting my IFR I was nearing Detroit when a line of thunderstorms was passing through the area. The controller had me go northbound up the west side of the city while waiting for a break in the line. We were VMC looking at the cells out the right window and...

A&P says Continental O-200D supposed to leak. Is that correct?

I had a 56 172 with an 0-300 for 9 years. It had small leaks that bothered me but that my IA said to monitor but not worry about. I told him I really wanted it dry so I’d know right away if I had a problem. He was retired and agreed to mentor me by personally guiding and supervising me in...

    Lake Havasu

A09 is working out well. They have started rebuilding some of the hangars that were damaged in the storm. The biggest drawback for me is that it isn’t lit. There are plans to correct that but no telling when. They also plan on resealing the taxi-ways, getting the fuel system working again...

Seems to be more retracts on the market

Four folks I know have sold their retracts because they had cut back on flying so much that they didn’t think they were able to stay ahead of their planes anymore. They said it came down to switching to something easier to fly or to stop flying. Three of the four switched to slower fixed gear...

    SW PoA brunch fly-in 3/26

Sorry for not being there today. I fired up but had a case of morning sickness. It cleared but didn’t want to take the chance of it trapping me away from home, or worse, sticking while in flight. I’m grounded until I get a chance to ream some exhaust valves. Gary

    Lake Havasu

I’m up in the Bullhead City. My plane is down but I will be working on the hangar I recently purchased at A09, Eagle Airfield just north of Needles. If you’re interested in a side trip I’d be happy to meet up with you at Eagle. If that’s not convenient I understand. gary

    2021 Airventure Poll

I’m going and by booking a room last October I got my wife to agree to go with me. Having AC at night was a key requirement for her. I’m planning on being there Wednesday through Saturday since I’ve always been there for the first part of the week in the past Gary

RG Maintenance - Which are Good, Bad?

I’ve had a 177RG for 6 or 7 years. No gear related issues. I (and my I/A) do perform the gear checks listed in the service manual at least every annual but we’ve never had to adjust anything yet. I also haven’t seen much about gear related problems in the digest for Cardinal Flyers during that...

Airplane stolen at Cottonwood AZ airport 12/31/20

Shortly after I got my first plane my, and several other hangars, were broken into and the 172 next to mine was stolen and wrecked. My plane was in the flight schools hangar at another airport where I was taking lessons or mine would have been taken. This took place in the Houston area and the...

    Texas in the winter?

We used to do Thanksgiving in South Padre and the gulf was generally warm enough to swim in if it was sunny. The water gets clearer and deep water gets closer to shore the further south you go. Flying the coast from South Padre to KLBX, south of Houston, the water got visibly muddier as you...
