Never flew that one but the new one is dicey at times.

    Question about airline go arounds

HKG BTDT the hills on the south side of the runway complex cause some pretty bad turbulence and in the winds reported...you were looking at 60-90 degrees off the runway at those speeds. The first report of severe turbulence and our company is required to go elsewhere. Fun airport where you can...

    Airliners and Icing/deicing

Type and intensity of precipitation is a factor also. We use a computer based system whereby we insert the holdover start time (time they start application of one wing) and the computer determines liquid water equivalent and spits out a no later than takeoff time or start the whole process...

    Question about airline go arounds

No fault No pressure Don’t write up anything You will get in trouble for not going around. There is a Pilagio based at my home airport that landed last week in below or right at mins and hit so hard that they went of the runway into the mud. CVR tapes pulled by Feds....mins call and someone...

    182 vs early Bo?

I own a 75 F33A Bonanza. I flew and still have access to a 75 182P. The Bonanza is faster and in my opinion and the opinion of my Chief Executive Officer flies, rides etc better. Her term was...it just feels solid. The 182 is a fantastic airplane that does everything well but not great...

    Addressing The Aviation Jobs Shortage

https://player.vimeo.com/video/239050403 There are a lot of pilots that think that they did four years of college, joined the military and worked and sacrificed there and then come to the airlines, that they are entitled to a senior Captain pay and schedule. I have had guys whine that it's not...

    Mixture Leaning

Ronnie, Welcome to ownership. May I suggest that you go to the Advanced Pilot Seminars website and download their PowerPoint for Target EGT. I am a proponent of extreme leaning ie. I aggressively lean at engine start and add just enough enrichment to allow an engine run up (don’t worry - you...

    Question for the Airline Pilots

Yes we do a walk around but maintenance does the hard stuff. Basically I look for nothing dripping, nothing hanging. It flew in and it will fly out. Seriously the whole process is the same but different.

    Question for the Airline Pilots

What Captain Kirk said is true (mostly) for passenger guys. For cargo it is a lot different. I commute so I have to stay up very very late to be sleepy and try to sleep a few hours before driving to the airport and jumpseating to my base. Arrive at base, update the company IPad and glance at...

Fly runway heading, I'll call your turn. . . .take off clearance canceled.

That is curious...since one of our pilots wives is a controller supervisor there and said that there is a constant flow through from OKC to there and MEM. I agree that training goes on at every facility but like I said "according to the locals" SDF is a major stop on the way to their final...

Fly runway heading, I'll call your turn. . . .take off clearance canceled.

SDF is a training station for controllers and they do a pretty good job as a whole. They get frustrated by an almost 100% refusal of visual approaches acceptance by us but if they came up and saw the lights of planes turning towards each othe for the parallel runways and the mass of ground...

May it be safer to use less power on takeoff?

We use “max” power for every takeoff. We can change the max by assuming or flexing to a higher takeoff temperature but in essence the takeoff is max for those conditions. For those who are itching to argue that it isn’t a balls full out max, you’re correct...but we have FADEC that controls...

Roy Halladay's Icon A5 down off of Tampa Coast

Just my opinion. Raising the costs by 50%, the onerous sales agreement they came up with in the last year or so, two fatal crashes and a company that is not wisely marketed (I just saw a statement that they are raising the price because they now know the true production costs????, again my...

Roy Halladay's Icon A5 down off of Tampa Coast

Icon is raising the price of the planes by fifty percent and now this. Just my opinion but I think their done. RIP Roy.

    Airline Guys Question

True story. Back when I flew passengers the FA’s were notorious for calling the cockpit and saying “warm it up”. Did it to the VP of Ops on a flight and the next thing we knew maintenance was rewiring the FA lighting and PA panel with a temp controller so they could adjust over a small temp...

    Airline Guys Question

Pilots do monitor the temp but it is easy to get behind when it is -54 C outside. Airflow is pretty much automated to the “needs”of temp and pressurization. A lot depends on the ducting and how leaky it is.

Fore flight Log time vs Hobbs - Logging

Very true statement here. I was once tasked with doing preliminary interviews at a small airline I worked for (calling them in, checking they had all the required paperwork, licenses and just a few gut level questions) and one of the things that caught my eye was someone with lets say 5000...

Tips for first time flying to Oshkosh

Don't arrive during the mass arrivals. You will be holding and holding and holding if your not part of one of the mass types.

    Sell me an engine monitor

Your flying along and enjoying the flight without a monitor and suddenly the engine starts shaking, smoking and your pooping...and your over water. You make it to an airport thankfully and the engine is checked and they find one cylinder has a melted piston and parts in the oil pan...new...
