    Battery Jump Packs

You just need two cars in series using another jumper cable.

    Car

"FYI: We are talking temperatures on the field of -7 degrees F and colder. 1. No idea what the problem is. Neither do any of the mechanics who have been working on it for the past 4 years. 2. You would think so, but when you pull the power to idle, the engine shuts down. It's exactly like...

    Car

if there is a partial obstruction in the fuel system, the engine may empty the carb bowl and then stumble if not quit. A normal run up won't catch this. Happened to me from a partially frozen gas line - actually slush ice in the gascolator. Beware of fuel that has been severely chilled...

    Cessna Crash Video from Cockpit..

I'm struck by what fraction of the accidents happen with every (or nearly every) seat filled. Six people in a C210T! We are waiting here in the Twin Cities for details and recovery of a 172I that disappeared into a very deep lake with three people on board (OK it wasn't dead full). Our 172M...

182 O-470 burg burp on climbout

What's happening with EGT? Our 172M (150 hp Lycoming) would first show carb ice as a reduction in EGT. By the time the manifold pressure was dropping it would really seriously iced up, although Lycs don't like to ice like Continentals.

A-65 lost prime to oil gauge

There's a lot of A & C series small continental owners that would like to see the details of how you did that. Raising the tail high worked on my J-4 but that may not work for everyone. As you know what we are trying to do is improve the ability of the oil pump to briefly pump air to reprime...

    GA in Illinois and Wisconsin?

At Shell Lake WI (KSSQ) I get $75 from my tenant. Concrete floor. 40 ft power bifold door. SOLID construction, 100 A service. No heat. No fuel, but only 1 mile from town & an airport courtesy car. The City has a hangar land lease rate of only 14 cent/sq ft on projected hangar area. Space...

GTN 650 - radio needs service?

That's an unlikely breaker failure mode. A breaker will usually either trip or weld itself shut.

    GA in Illinois and Wisconsin?

In WI it doesn't get much better than this (Shell Lake WI - KSSQ). My house under the trees. Hangar across the street..... https://www.dropbox.com/s/pldsb9ggpx26tod/Aerial%20SLRamp.JPG?dl=0

    What's an old O-320 worth?

FWIW - I once witnessed an 0-320 disassembled that showed heavy localized pressure on the front main bearing. Apparently on the previous assembly, the alignment dowel for the front bearing journal got caught in the edge of the mating hole on the bearing shell, locally pressing it into the crank...

    Attorney for an aircraft purchase?

Maybe the one who needs a lawyer is the A & P that tries to read the potential AD list?

Any landing you walk away from....

Easy - the "pilot" just reverted to driving a car as soon as he drifted left. RUDDER! RUDDER! RUDDER! RUDDER! RUDDER! RUDDER! Why isn't this emphasized more? Cars are different! That's what most of his time is in. (not a flight instructor)

    Logbook entry for overhauled engine

I once understood certified repair stations were only required to hold repair orders for 2 years. Iszzat so? Seems like a big hole in the system.

Spark plug gaskets - replace or not?

I also wire brushed the plug thread OD's and cylinder thread ID's to clean everything up before reassembling (with anti-seize of course). I felt it helped save the Helicoil inserts. Anyone else do that? or ?

The funny stuff us A&Ps find

Heard rumors of a well washed industrial vacuum cleaner inside of one of the fuel tanks of a Lockheed Electra. Supposedly found during the mandated beef-up of the engine mount structure. Can anybody confirm?

The funny stuff us A&Ps find

A 172H - Tap wrench in the belly and a spark plug in the heat muff.

    Reduce your Skyhawk CHT!

Our 172M was cold blooded as we didn't note things were warm until it got over ~ 330 DegF. We kept the cyl fins clean and the baffles tight and rigid. It may be time for some testing. There should be about 5 to 6 inches of water pressure across the baffle system at cruise. Or?

PA-28R Arrow Nose Gear Strut Over-Extended?

As I understand chemistry, whether a strut is filled with 80% N2 (i.e. air) vs 100% N2 doesn't change the adiabatic compression constant because both N2 and O2 are diatomic gases. Air that contains significant amounts of water (H20) will behave a little differently as water vapor is a triatomic...

Learning to change your own oil

I chuck the engine end in my metal lathe & part the can right next to the chuck. Gotta have a pan under the bed though.
