Oh Continental, what have you done now?

A hangar partner's '49 Bonanza blew its RH main gear strut cap off, making a big pimple in the top wing skin. Again it was the slight chamfer radius side that was out. I saw it happen. The environment around a crank damper pin is pretty severe. The exact shape of the snap ring groove is...

    MOGAS and Muffler Issues

Our 172M burned out the flame tubes about every 400 hrs when it first ran on 80 octane way back then, and again when it ran for about 1400 hrs more on MoGas. Our mechanics would only allow the flame tubes to be come so warped on annual. The purpose of fuel is to provide heat. There is no...

No crankshafts available for 18-24 months

Automotive crankshafts are cast out of nodular iron because of its superior self damping properties. Years ago (>50) they were simpler forgings, like aircraft crankshafts are now, because of the better physical properties although self-damping isn't a superior property of forgings. Automotive...

How old is too old for a propeller?

From discussions w a McCauley engr - A prop at takeoff is 3/32" to 1/8" inch bigger in diameter. It is a non-redundant fatigue-loaded component that can down an airplane if it fails.

No crankshafts available for 18-24 months

I believe aircraft engine crankshafts are forged from SAE4340, which through-hardened and is about as tough as any steel alloy can be found. The fatigue properties are further enhanced by nitriding, which puts the outer fibers in compression.

    Aviation Writer Len Morgan

I'll never forget his article describing his apprehensions on the new first Braniff 747 flight takeoff from DFW to HON with full revenue load. The combined flight crew 747 experience was well under 10 hrs TT. Still brings tears to my eyes.....

    Cracked exhaust pipe - options

I would expect that someone nearby on the ground could hear a strange cackle in your exhaust note. There's obviously been a lot of fire coming out of that crack.

Better be an extra-good loan rate - or a bank loan officer might be in trouble from screwing up a sizeable bank profit opportunity.

The obvious solution to this conundrum is there should be mandatory yearly pressure testing of all aircraft tankso_O

Low battery, is only a year old

Some versions may, but it is not obvious that they all do. Earlier Battery Tender Jrs, while excellent battery maintainers for example, don't.

Low battery, is only a year old

I have had very good luck restoring a sulfated 12V lead acid motorcycle battery using a pulse de-sulfator. Years back there was one sold by EAA Ch 79 for less than $25. It was probably just a chapter fund raiser. It was simply a kit of components with a small circuit board that when connected...

    Hangar door fix

That's an unusually big door. I'm convinced there's a lot of shade tree engineering that goes into many of these systems.

    What's wrong with this picture...

Unless there's a spacer that has been completely omitted from the OP pictures, that would place unwanted heavy compression loads between the mounting tangs of the alternator.

Advice on ANR headsets for passengers

I had a kit intercom in our 172M from Jim Wier of RST Electronics. The advantage of kit stuff is that you end up with a schematic. I added a small zener diode to the RST package to get 9 V to power the HI headset from there even though HI tech later told me that wouldn't work. I couldn't...

Advice on ANR headsets for passengers

I have also had impressive reduction with the Headsets-Inc kit - installed in my David Clark H10-40 about 25 years ago. Being an engineer, and comparing an analog rejection system, it would seem like they would be better rejecting random vibration (especially at frequencies below say 200 Hz) vs...
