    Eight alternators in 24 months!

There is no rotating rectifier. All that stuff is on or near the stator. A key is look at the detailed nature of the failure of each alternator. It is not hard to do. I'm surprised it hasn't been flagged earlier - just to say "vibration". Of what? What broke in each case?

    Eight alternators in 24 months!

I all of my rambling above on torsional vibration assume that all of the failures have been on the alternator rotors. If the failures are on the stator or the rest of the stationary mechanical support system, linear accelerometers would be a valid diagnostic tool. You certainly have thrown...

    Eight alternators in 24 months!

My guess is there may well be a problem in the torsional vibration control system. Have there been signs of wear on the belt drive (I assume this is that version of O-470)? At least I would be very suspicious of the actual crankshaft damper bushing and drive pins dimensions. I wonder if the...

Would you be interested in some form of back-up propulsion for your piston single? If yes, how much would you be willing to pay for it?

Trying to compensate for an engine out in a twin? - Half of them will be in someone else's airplane.

Carb ice? (and beating myself up...)

Doesn't anybody teach to combine carb heat with mixture adjustment to raise the EGT to avoid losing the engine altogether? I also see the recommendation from the Cessna (?) operating manual is to go full rich which would just make severe carb icing worse. Or is it just because of my experience...

    Lovely preflight check

I'd be interested to know what the breakaway torque on the crack-adjacent cyl base nut is.

Flying public indicates desire for fully-assembled aircraft

Even from a failure/risk standpoint, having an occasional missing fastener in a row probably isn't the end of the world. But when the missing ones are all in a row, the possibilities of a ripping/progressive failure is a lot more critical.

    Broken vernier throttle

Retired. Have idle metal lathe & 1 inch dia alum bar. Need dimensions. It is winter here in MN.

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

Clarify for this non A&P - For these six critical fasteners, it looks to me like they are each loaded in shear and retained by common low-profile shear nuts, which in turn are supposed to be cotter keyed. Shear nuts may have a torque spec (yes?) but the real problem is the lack of cotter keys.

    Need a lightspeed compatible cable

Looks like only 4 wires are needed at the plug, and probably the two black shrink-wrapped shield wires are redundant.

An extraordinarily bizarre airspeed mystery that no A&P can solve

Ding or bird poop on the leading edge or top of the wing? Ding on leading edge of the propeller? It does appear to me that something aerodynamic is at fault. The new need for rudder trim suggests it may be one wing, and closer to the tip rather than the root.

    Age 75+ Insurance

I wonder if there might be a risk correlation study based on driving history? There has to be a lot of data there.

    Age 75+ Insurance

Flew for 55 years, drove M/Cs for 50 years, cars for 70 years, and had a house for 55 years, all with no accidents or claims. Only a fluke in Minnesota no-fault car insurance law allowed me to have medical coverage for an at-fault bicycle accident. Lucky, I guess!

    Alternator Mounting Problem

The likely reason for a one-way clutch in cars would be a way to prevent torsional crankshaft vibration from being reflected/applied to the alternator armature. I've never heard of this sort of thing before either, but vibration amplitude limiting would be the effect of a one way drive clutch...

    Lycoming crankshaft idler gear backlash

Assuming the ground mating surfaces are only flat instead of one being very slightly conical, would make the dowel potentially absorb fatigue instead of just assembly alignment. Especially with the short bolt and funny metal tab to preload it. THX!

    Lycoming crankshaft idler gear backlash

Q - Is there a different P/N for camshafts used with roller lifters, vs the cam used with mushroom lifters? The resulting valve timing for that variation alone will be different for geometric reasons. The attachment method used for the cam drive gear to the crankshaft end is certainly a...

    Intermittent ammeter discharging troubleshooting

There's nothing wrong with using an oscilloscope for troubleshooting - especially if chasing noise like Dan Thomas above, but most shops don't have access to that sort of technology. And again most of the new ones are now digital. I have a 55 year old HP 130C analog scope that is perfect for...
