    Any Purdue Grads out there?

Hey there, Relatively recent Purdue grad here... ask away! I graduated May 2012 in Aviation Technology and had a blast out there. I made some really great connections, learned a lot, and had a lot of fun too. It's a great Big 10 school and it gave me some very unique opportunities like...

    CTAF procedures

Which one is the active? My home base has four possible choices. They are all active. Shaking my head at people that say that and don't specify which runway. Under calm wind conditions, multiple runways are often in use.

    CTAF procedures

How about, "departing the active" or "clear of the active." I shake my head... :dunno:

    Here's the new bird

Nice looking bird! I used to fly a 421TP (Riley conversion) which isn't exactly the same thing but similar. What a fun ride.

    MMSD vs. MMSL?

The nice thing about MMSL is that you don't need a handler. The FBO takes care of it all for you. The service was truly outstanding when I was there.

    MMSD vs. MMSL?

Have been to both. Where are you staying? We just went into MMSL last week and it was an AWESOME experience. Lots and lots of help, great price, and they don't even accept tips so the service is top notch. Really great place. If you're staying in San Jose Del Cabo, MMSD is closer. Otherwise...

    Cirrus Rocker Switch Sticker

I am in search of a white oval sticker that belongs on the bottom of rocker switches in Cirrus aircraft. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

    Ramp Checked

I'm actually ok with ramp checks as long as the inspector is reasonable. There are a lot of yahoos out there that fly around without licenses, medicals, BFRs, etc. Maybe ramp checks catch some of those wackos. I certainly hear them (or don't) all the time on CTAF at the airport I am based out...

    Joining an airway on departure….

That would be my preferred method as well. The FMS in one of the airplanes I fly makes it real easy to do this. You make "SBY" the FROM waypoint and the next fix, "MAGGO" the TO waypoint. The Garmin 400/500 series also make it pretty easy by allowing you to "activate leg" between two points.

    Best So Cal Airport?

Almost no one likes that airport. The community hates the noise and the only thing the airport authority knows how to do is send nastygrams to pilots about how much noise they make. We had to do a full power run-up for maintenance at 6pm once and coordinated it through the tower who asked...

    Paid pilots safer?

Very true. This is incorporated into our safety management system. When we fill out risk assessments, empty legs are given greater weight in terms of risk.

    Joining an airway on departure….

Usually the clearance is "radar vectors to join V308, HTO as filed." If not, Providence should give you a radar vector to join the airway on initial contact.

Anyone here ever flown to Mexico?

    IOW, "request VFR climb."

    Paid pilots safer?

Not only encouraged, but required (part 135). If our POI was conducting or observing a check airman giving a checkride and the pilot(s) didn't use a checklist, that is an automatic unsatisfactory performance.

    Paid pilots safer?

Sorry to hear that. It shouldn't be that way. We use a checklist on every leg.

Anyone here ever flown to Mexico?

It depends where you go. Use a handler and bring cash. We usually bring $1000 every time we go to Mexico. I've only been to MMSD and MMLP but they were really fast. Cleared customs in under 15 minutes. A good handler will help significantly. Make sure you have proof of mexican aircraft insurance...

    2.5 million for a 421??

Cool, cool. I used to be based there but now I am out on the west coast. HPN is still my home away from home.

    2.5 million for a 421??

Used to fly one with -112 engines. I guess that explains it. Wish we had the -135's.

    2.5 million for a 421??

Beefed up wing spar? Can't do this with the Riley conversion'ed 421's.
