Any Thorp T-18 pilots in SoCal?

For what it's worth, I am 6'0" and 175lbs. I fly an RV-9A, and it's very comfortable for me. I sat in a T-18 and my legs were pinned underneath the panel...just couldn't fit.

You guys- I've got a jet

Some folks just overstep. This guy was an extreme case. I had a guy being a little less extreme a while back. It was 500ft overcast at my airport (uncontrolled field). I was doing my runup, getting ready to get clearance, and a guy hops on the radio and asks me if I know the field is IMC. I...

    Do pilots still navigate?

I never carry paper sectionals. But after thinking over this thread for a while, there is still one scenario I keep paper around: approach plates. I primarily use my iPad/EFB for shooting approaches. But since it's the only mechanism I have, I also print out the approaches I'm planning and keep...

    Do pilots still navigate?

Wow, glad you were VMC! And I wouldn't rent it again, either!

    Do pilots still navigate?

Agreed. We've all heard the news stories of people in cars that followed their GPS onto a train track or the wrong way down a one-way street. You can't blame the technology for that.

    Do pilots still navigate?

Idahoflyer said that if GPS goes out, he’ll lose the moving map capability, but can still use the electronic charts to navigate. I agree. There’s not much need for paper charts anymore.

    First time buyer here.

Beech Sundowner, or Super Musketeer. GREAT planes. A little slow, but solid as a rock. Not as popular as the Cherokee, so usually go for a little less.

    Terrafugia

I think that works for an urban commuter mission, but my mission is 90% XC. I really like the idea of parking at home, driving to the airport, and taking off for a long XC. Quad-copter won't ever fit that mission (IMHO).

    Terrafugia

If I didn't have to shell out $350/mo for a crappy T-hangar, I'd be happier. That's quite a bit of fixed expense that seems to go up every year. However, I'm not willing to sacrifice range or speed, so...

XXXL head bt/anr not Lightspeed headset choices?

I've used them for the past 4 years, and like them just fine. Just as good as Lightspeed ANR my wife uses. I like them for the extra headroom.

    Oh No Another New Guy

Yes, it is a kit plane. I have an RV-9, which is also a kit plane. There is a decent secondary market for these. You don’t have to build. Buy one already built! Best bang for the buck, hands down.

    Spatial Disorientation Today

I really think it comes down to proficiency. Over the summer, there wasn’t any IMC, and flying the Foggles just the minimum amount didn’t keep me proficient. Then recently when I hit the soup solid at 200ft AGL on takeoff (not just busting brought a layer), and ATC gave me a climbing turn, I...

Why are airplane engine TBO hours so low?

Coming at this from a completely different angle. I put 100 to 150 hrs/yr on my plane. That means the engine will last 13-20 yrs. I’m good with my engine lasting ~15 years. If I ran my car as hard as I run my plane, I’d be OK replacing the engine after 15 years too.

First time in the clouds and I gave up

Lots of good comments here. I wouldn't give up yet, either. This was your first experience. Try it 10 times, and see if you feel differently. I personally don't enjoy a 3-hour trip in solid IFR the whole way. But I'm really glad I got the rating, really glad I can pop through layers that would...
