    Daily Pic

Finally got to use aviation for practical purposes this weekend. The trip from Albany to visit friends on Long Island is a white-knuckle 4 hour car ride, but is a leisurely 80 minute flight. On the way home I was treated to a spectacular sight as the sun got below the high broken layer just as...

Piper Cherokee 140 With High Engine Time. Worth The Buy?

This is why many airplane purchases happen half a country away :-) If there are Cherokees in your area that look good, it wouldn't hurt much to write letters to the owners saying you might be interested in buying when they're thinking of selling. There are an awful lot of planes sold without...

Pros/Cons of Joining the Civil Air Patrol?

Pros/Cons of Joining the Civil Air Patrol?

This is incredible news! The G1000 plane seems to only come to town I'm not available, and I've been procrastinating because I didn't want to have to take 2 form 5 rides. This will help quite a bit. Thanks for mentioning it.

    Flight Bag Recommendations?

When these threads come up, I think we have to assume the OP isn't really interested in just using a backpack or whatever. I don't like paying extra for a task-specific bag either, but I found that aviation bags are priced similarly to bags purpose-made for nearly any other industry. The...

Piper Cherokee 140 With High Engine Time. Worth The Buy?

Which is why I didn't say (or even imply) someone was trying to rip anyone off. ;) An old plane with a nearly timed out engine is roughly analogous to a 14 year old car with 180,000 miles. You might get some cheap transportation for a while, but pretty soon it's going to need something expensive.

Piper Cherokee 140 With High Engine Time. Worth The Buy?

If the engine is running well, why would the owner sell it? It's fully depreciated, so any hours beyond TBO are like free hours to them. It's the wrong time to sell an asset, so I'd assume that there's something wrong and they're trying to get rid of if so they don't have to overhaul it. I'd...

How many hours did it take for your high performance?

We insure with Avemco too. Unfortunately, I'm the new kid on the block and I don't think anyone's going to bat with Avemco to get them to change the requirements. It certainly won't happen before I finish my 10 hours anyway. Maybe when I'm king of the world...

    Flight Bag Recommendations?

Seems there's an awful lot of pilots here who never needed a flashlight or needed to fix a loose cowl fastener or something away from home base. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Flight Bag Recommendations?

What features do you like in a bag? Are you an "everything in its place" kind of a guy? If so, something like Brightline is probably a good fit. I'm near the opposite end of the organization spectrum. I want to get at everything one handed in one motion, so I don't want to fiddle with all...

72 Arrow 1100 SMOH, but 20 years since.

It's a common step in a pre-buy inspection. If your engine sat so long and you wouldn't let me fully inspect it, I'd walk away. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Love tap at Reno Air Race

What made me gasp wasn't the first contact, it was the abrupt pull up by the one that had been in the lead. Looked like he damned near smashed right into the other one. There's a post over on Beechtalk that both jets are totaled. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

72 Arrow 1100 SMOH, but 20 years since.

You'll want a thorough prebuy done by a shop knowledgeable in the type, and that shop will almost certainly do a borescope inspection of the engine and probably pull a cylinder. One of the common issues is that corrosion develops on the cam lifters, which gouge the lobes as the camshaft spins...

    Instrument Training

Have you practiced the old training figures? Getting these down can make you a really precise pilot. Pick a triangle to fly, and put one of these figures in the middle of each leg and do an approach at each airport. You can easily burn up 2 hours and get *tons* of good practice in...

Aircraft for IFR Training and Beyond

If ATP is your ultimate goal, why not go through one of the professional pilot programs out there? You'll spend less money in the long run and get yourself hired as a pilot much faster. IMHO $60k is a good amount of money to buy half of the plane you're looking for. Depending on where...

Logging hours for cheaper aircraft insurance...

Call your agent to get a quote. A major portion of the insurance is the value of the airplane, so you may actually save some money on an Archer vs. a 172. There are too many other variables for you to set a reasonable expectation without talking to some agents. But @TCABM is right. You want...

    Where would you land?

To quote Bob Hoover: fly as far into the crash as possible. Also, I've never seen an instance of a hardwood canopy supporting an aircraft. I've seen several instances where a plane crashes through the canopy, maybe breaks a few branches, and then cannot be seen from the air. There's an old...

How many hours did it take for your high performance?

The 10 hour insurance rule is so ubiquitous that I'd be surprised if you can negotiate for something lower for a club. I'd think the 777 qualified guy could get signed off for that, though :) The one that's driving me nuts is my club insurance-driven 10 hour requirement for complex checkout...

    C172 tailstrikes

It doesn't require that much talent. I did it once after landing in a full stall and then pulling back a little more for the aerodynamic braking. The landing and the pull back were smooth. Heard a strange noise and realized it was the sound of the tie down ring scraping the runway. This was...
