    Who screwed up here?

From the direction they were approaching the IAF, the MSA was 10,700' The controller was wrong, and they just failed to catch it.

    Who screwed up here?

ATC and the flight crew. If not for GPWS, somebody would be eating dirt instead of crow. ATC, cleared the plane below the MSA to the IAF. Flight crew, failed to stay at or above the published altitudes while on the approach.

    Who screwed up here?

If you're at an altitude below the MSA and NOT on vectors or a segment of the published procedure, that should be a clue. Seems a TWA flight (514) hit a mountain some years back headed to Dulles because of safe altitude confusion.

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/pilots/alien-flight-training-program/aliens-and-non-us-citizens-seeking-flight-training You should be able to find the necessary information to get approval for flight training using the link above. I have trained several pilots for their Instrument ratings under...

    Marion Indiana Accident

Kinetic forces being what they are, the jet has a larger mass, solidly on concrete decelerating, but still moving right-to-left, vs. the light 150 just above rotation speed hitting the vertical stablizer with propel the plan in the direction the jet is still moving (right to left). The relative...

    Marion Indiana Accident

No doubt the Citation was landing on the longer Rwy 4-22 and the 150 taking off on 15-33. If the Citation wasn't basically touching down at the time it would have been worse. Another example of runway incursion avoidance and situational awareness. There was a similar collision (or near...

    Approach to closed runway?

Typically, if a runway is closed, they won't approve an approach to that runway. Why not shoot the RNAV 26 and circle to 8?

Panel failure in IMC. A few questions.

I see somebody got to that before I saw it... I teach the TC + VSI method and monitor with Compass/GPS track and Altimeter. I have my IFR student flying the entire anticipated checkride without the primary gyro. In my plane with the G5 AND still have both vacuum instruments (I always change...

    Don't buy those G5's

The G5 PFD is nice. $2200. The G5 HSI adds HSI+GS and GPS roll-steering on legacy autopilots. $2900. VFR Aspen starts at $9K. Say again?

    X-Country planning...VOR +80nm apart & foreflight and V-airways?

Because you can't. It's easy, waypoint to waypoint. If the waypoints are on the airway, then you're on the airway.

Panel failure in IMC. A few questions.

My plane has a G5 PFD with a Vacuum AI backup. A year and a half ago, I was flying with a client in his 172 during the early evening and we were shooting an ILS through an overcast that topped at abount 2000-2500 and base at around 600. Everything started OK but in the clouds he was having a...

    Airport with ILS/no RNAV?

I love those unsupported assertions. AOPA did an on-line course called "A practcal approach" that discussed the same issue, even making the same assertion, but there was no data to support the author's asserrtion. After discussing his opinions about non-precision approach, the final conclusion...

    Airport with ILS/no RNAV?

If you have a 430W, there is no advantage in getting a GTN, much less one with less capability than the 430W. While not commom, you can lose GPS even with a WAAS unit. In the last 5 years, my 430W has flagged several times during approaches and downgraded it's accuracy to LNAV a couple of...

Do I need to do a PT in this case?

In this case, if you begin the approach from the VOR (IAF) you are required to do the procedure turn. The only instance when this is not the case would be if ATC was vectoring you to the final approach course. HILPT is still a procedure turn, but in this case, with the VOR basically on-field...

How much do you use foggles / view limiting device after you get your IFR ticket?

    Fixed Gear Vs. Retracts

Cons: Potential for gear up landings, maintenance costs, weight. The more complex the plane, the more there is to go wrong. Speed advantages are not usually that great and fuel consumption goes way up. Say if you were considering an Archer vs. an Arrow, in terms of overall costs vs...

    Guy descending into me.

ATC calling traffic doesn't mean there will be a conflict, it's usually an advisory. If there is a conflict, they will advise you. However, like the example cited here, it was the Mooney changing altitude after being advised of the opposite traffic (both initially at appropriate altitudes)...

I see now why lots of planes have old avionics

Depends on your needs. A 430W and indicator can be had for around $9k and an Vizion autoplot for $5k, then figure installation. Keep your best radio as number 2 (no cost) and at least 2-3K for a certified ADS-B out solution. For ADS-B In, you can use a stratus, flightbox, or GDL device for...
