    Box vectors and lost comm

    Missed Approach non-direct holding patterns

If you're really not sure... 1) fly to the holding fix, then... 2) immediately turn to the outbound heading, then... fly outbound for 1 minute or the distance specified for the hold, then... turn into the protected side of the hold and direct to the fix, then... Hold!

    CFI - Power Off 180s - Cherokee 140

Be judicious with your flaps. The 140 will head to ground as soon as you retard the throttle. Once the power is out, it's all energy management to the landing spot. After 4-5 practices...you should have it pretty much down. If you're going to be short minimize the flaps and use best glide...

Power Flow Exhaust and O-320 PIREP

I had on installed on my Cherokee 140 and thought there was some improvement. I have a Warrior II now and unless there is real, objective data, I don't think that the so-so improvement is worth the cost.

Piper PA28 and PA32 owners take note

Not as much as you might think. The PA-28 series has oleo struts to dissipate the landing forces being transferred to the wing spar. The PA28R specifically is a heavier plane with the 200HP engine and retractable gear that is typically used for mostly for commercial training and maneuvers and...

Flight training "NOT FOR HIRE" in experimental

The CFI cannot provide flight training for compensation in an experimental aircraft that the CFI provides. The CFI can provide flight training for compensation in an airplane that the student provides.

CFI - Do it in my Cherokee or 172?

If you have the certificates, they won't care what plane you got them in. Aside form the Low vs. High wing preferences, C-172 and PA-28 flight characteristics are pretty similar.

IFR Flight Plan To Destination With RNAV Only But Plane Not GPS

FAR 91.169 requires that each person filing an IFR flight plan "must include 1) information required under FAR 91.153 [information required for a VFR flight plan], and 2) an alternate airport." If the alternate airport does not have an instrument approach procedure, then the alternate weather...

IFR Flight Plan To Destination With RNAV Only But Plane Not GPS

If you are current, you can file IFR. If the destination is forecast VFR, then you don't need an alternate, but remember that you have to use "forecast" wx. as a basis for determining his prior to departure and not METAR data.

    Any Garmin GDL 39 Users?

Seen it happen a few times myself. I thought it was the GDL39-3D device and sent is back to Garmin for an exchange...no joy...did the same thing. It's just a few seconds, but it does make the logbook function and Synvis function pretty useless. Some days it never happens and sometimes in...

    Recreational Pilot Certificate Questions

The Recreational is a viable certificate, but was under-utilized and under-appreciated from the beginning. It is basically like Sport pilot, but you get to fly real planes (C172, Piper PA-28's, Grumman AA5s, etc. with no more than 180 HP) with one passenger in day VFR conditions. The 50 NM...

    Reasoning behind NOTAM.

They won't. Often they are NA because they haven't been test-flown by the FAA. In the case cited, the change in runway length may require an adjustment to the RNAV approaches. I don't think it would affect the LOC approach unless it might affect the MDA. In any case, whether we understand...

FBO will not give me my plane back

Bizarre. What's the airport and FBO? While they may be able to pursue you for fees, I don't think that they can legally deny you access to, or use of your property.

They're all over the place here. Home (KJNX) airport has an ILS, nearby KRWI, KPGV, KGWW, KLHZ, KISO (all of these within 50 miles) also have ILS. All non-towered fields. That's one reason why this is such a good area for IFR training.

I do have a G5 PFD interfaced with my 430W and am mulling the G5 HSI with the AP interface that would upgrade my Century to GPSS. Trig has a new NavCom out next year that will be TSO'd and likely less than Garmin unit.

    ForeFlight departure procedure

That's one nice advantage of GP. Once you input the flight plan, all the procedures, take-off and alternate minimums are loaded automatically. Even better, the TO and Alt minimums are not the full list, but pages for the specific airport(s) in the flight plan. I've seen too may FF pilots...

    KMAI Area please help

Radar approaches are well worth doing. I did a PAR at Ft. Polk back in 2010 and the first approach I have my students do on their long XC IFR flight is an ASR approach at KILM.

    Cockpit Cosmetics

I have been upgrading the interior look of "the Duck" for a couple of years, starting with a new Airtex Interior (which was of much better quality than the original piper materials), new belts, panel lighting and such. My pilot's yoke had been "badly" painted before I bought the plan, so this...
